Anyway, my friend started playing online poker and buys in for $80 at $1/$2NL tables.

Why is it better to buyin the full amount at lower stakes (as FTR suggests)?

I don't actually no the reason. He is not used to playing deep stacked. So he'll probably do better playing with a 40bb stack. I don't know if he's ever layed down pocket aces. But I don't know if there has ever been a time when he should have done (since he mostly plays 50bb or less).
Why should he buyin full? (or is he ok as it is?)

It is better to buy in at the full amount because every edge you have has a value to it. The larger the percentage of buyin you have the greater you expand each edge. This is of course assuming you have an edge over your competition which you will if you have beat the levels before it.

What you should be asking your friend is why he plays 2o0NL when he just started playing. Is his bankroll only $80? Also i think you need to be topped off when you play so that you get maximum value from your hands when you hit big so you can stack the donks, or double up off the bigger stacks.

You can play short-stacked, there are several reasons why you might do it (Sklansky & Miller set some out in NLTAP). The problem is that it's a recipe for stunting your poker growth.
Deep-stacked poker is the only way to learn to play properly on all streets.

There's also the whole "losing value" argument, but really that's not a major factor at this level.

the deeper the stacks, the more can u exploit opp´s postflop mistakes and weaknesses. playing shortstacked causes a higher variance, since you have to shove flips more often. you´re cutting down your implied odds against fully stacked villians.

good point. i was thinking along these lines.

my friend is 18. he doesn't really have a "bankroll" - just gets together any money he can find. he'll probably lose his money within a month although he did win a few hundred dollars on his 1st day (i think $300). his br is more than $80 but probably less than $500.

he does play to win but i don't know if he sees the long term. he just wants a quick rush and to do well in the short term. playing for 5% of his way to difficult for him. he doesn't intend on becoming a pro and slowly but surely improving his game without busting.

i thought there might be a really good reason to play with a full buyin but i don't think there are and he definitely won't see it that way. thanks for all the replies.

i wouldnt bother advising someone who wont listen or care. ive mates blowing money left and right online but meh they dont want to know they suck. they play goot END of story
