Default Now with pics: Fortune's Fortress of Solitude, Part Trips

    So here's the setup.

I've grinded several small starting bankrolls up to larger amounts. I'm not talking miracle works or anything here, but I've grinded 50 dollar rolls into around a grand a few times.

Something's always caused me to have to withdraw my roll... Car repairs, unexpected bills, etc.

I'm a solid player with a good understanding of the game. I've been a proven winner a few times over, but I've really never had much to show for it.

In my latest attempt, I've grinded 100 up to a little over 500, but then I cashed out half of it and bought myself two presents. A new grill, and a baller humidor and a nice selection of stogies for my cigar collection.

And it felt good... really, really good. I hardly ever buy anything for myself. It's a trend I'd like to continue.

So I was sitting in my office contemplating how to continue this trend and what I'd like to do next... and it hit me.

    The answer is... My office.

I feel every person needs their own private space. My office is about the most unballer room in the history of the world. I work there 4 days a week. It has old paneling up that was conceivably stylish in 1962. Maybe. It has nasty red carpet that I'm guessing is of a nice 1970's vintage. My computer desk is kinda falling apart, and my computer chair is a hideous old chair. It's not even a computer chair... it's like a living room chair from around the same time as my carpet.

    My bookshelves, however, are nice.

It's not that my house is bad, it's just that my office is that room in the house that you want to remodel, but you just don't get around to it. Other things always take precedence.

So I've decided that we're going to attempt to turn my raggedy office into Fortune 500's Fortress of Solitude. And we're going to do it in small steps, because I function better that way, and no goal seems so far away it's unattainable.

So here's the deal. My bankroll is down to 250 after my cashout. I've divided the remodel up into 5 steps.

    Step 1: Paint
    Step 3: New Office Chair
    Step 2: New Floor
    Step 4: New Desk
Step 5: Two new Flat Panel LCD Monitors

and possibly more steps to be added.

The goals are all small and modest. So my goal is to pay for them all with poker... AND to increase my remaining bankroll by 10 percent each time.

So on to step 1: Paint.

This is an easy step. I estimate the cost of paint to do my office to be around 50 dollars. That means I need to get my bankroll to 250 + 50 + (250*.1) or $325.

I'm going to do this via SNGs. I'm currently playing 6+1s on AP.

I'll post hands here as necessary.

Pics need to be forthcoming, I think.

What would be a baller color for my office?

Not a bad first day... 6 SNGs, + 31 bucks.

All of my hands were pretty standard, I felt.

Seems like you've already made up your mind, but wouldn't it be smarter to cash out more money later so you can move up in stakes? Either way good luck with this operation. You should post pictures of your office now, and a finished product type shot, but maybe that wont be for a little while. GL!

Slow day today... only got in two games for +13. One win, and one early bustout.

Kinda disappointed in the hand selection so far... all the decisions have been pretty easy thus far.

JJDAMAN, Yes, moving up would be easier if I cashed out all at once.

However, I like the idea of several smaller goals for two reasons...

One, it helps me stay motivated because the goal is almost always in sight.

Two, since this is a "remodeling" project, I don't have the time to tackle it all at once, so it'll be done in steps as well...

    Ahh... symmetry.

Another slow day... only got in 3 games.

Played well, + 6 bucks. 1 win, 1 bad beat, 1 cold deck where I ran Aces into kings.

Here's my beat... I don't think I misplayed it TOO bad.

I'm in a very similar situation to you. I build my roll up a bit, but can't bring myself to gamble with money that I could spend on stuff I need. Recently I've been setting myself new mini-targets (eg. spent $300 on a suit for work today out of poker money) and it does feel good.

Good luck, I think all your targets are attainable, and you'll find you play better poker when you have solid goals.

yeah, I figured as much. Ran into pocket 7s that turned a boat. *shrug*.... Quick update... I'm within 5 bucks of my goal for part 1.

That would put my BR at the 325 for step 1. However, I'm thinking we may just bite the bullet and buy the paint. It dawned on me that 330 is precisely 30 buyins for the 11s...

I think moving up might be the smarter move.

I won't have time to paint for a couple weeks anyway.

Part 1 Complete. Ran decent tonight.

I'm now moving up to the 11s and getting myself a new computer chair.

    Current Bankroll is 333.

Estimated cost is $80, and then we have the Extra 10 percent,or around 33 bucks. 333+33+80 = 346.

Let's call it 345 to keep the math simple.

So you completed part 1 but the money is still part of your roll, am i right??
Jman: every time the action is to you, it's an opportunity for you to make the perfect play.
  15. #15
Yes. While not part of the ORIGINAL plan, I"ve decided for this part that I'm just gonna buy the paint out of pocket. Reason being that my goal was 325, and I was playing 6+1s. If I float this one on my own, I realized the 330 that I got to leaves me with 30 Buyins for the 11s.

Seems more fruitful to move up for a while, since I won't get to paint for a while anyhow.

Moved up to the 11s today.

Oddly the play there is more improved than I expected. Players were definitely a bit tighter and more conservative. Still nothing I can't handle.

I made a couple adjustments and loosened up just a bit, made few more steals.

Played 4. Did well. + 58 for the session.

I am rolling on a wave of good cards right now... I blew through Part Deux in two days.

Bank roll is now setting at 453, and the goal was 450.

Seems dumb to withdraw at this point. Plus, I got a line on a nice computer chair that was cheaper than expected. I just went and bought it. Next up is the floor, methinks. Carpet should run me around 150, I figure.

Let's base it on 450, so... 450+150+45.... 645. This one should take me a little longer.

gl man, I've enjoyed reading this one. Something that I'd benefit from (doesn't mean you have the time or desire, i know) would be possibly your 3 or 4 observations on biggest difference between the 6 & 11 SNGs? I'm a SNG grinder myself & I enjoy learning about the general differences from one stake to the next. Thanks!!

    So far at the 11s:

    I've played 17 of them and I'm running a ridiculous 117% ROI.

redmanstl: I'll be happy to, eventually. Let me get 50-100 of them under my belt so I might actually know what I'm talking about.

Right now, I'm riding a crazy wave of positive variance. It's only a matter of time before things level out, I'm sure.

I had a hideous day playing today.. down about 40 bucks. Decided to step away and start on the other part of this project. I went and got primer the other night, so I'm ready to tackle this bitch. I decided to finally take pictures of a few things, and then the batteries in my camera died. So here's what I got....

This is a general overview of my office. You'll note the ugly overall feeling of it.

You'll note the oddball white wall. Hideous.

This is a picture of my cats that happened to be on my camera. They're fuckin' adorable and you know it.

Lastly, a nice shot of my hideous red carpet...

Tonight, I'm clearing everything out so I can paint walls this weekend.

New carpet will follow next week.

Things have been a little swingy. I actually dropped about 115 bucks in a bad two day run. I sat down and looked at my histories, thinking it was variance, and it wasn't... it was small leaks in my play, like calling reraises with AQ. I sat back and tightened up, and did my best to avoid marginal situations. I was suffering from "Posi-tilt: where I was running so good, I felt invincible., and I wasn't. My banroll dropped below 400 after being up to about 530. The tweaks have helped me build back up to about 505... So i dodged a bullet there.

On the office front, I'm typing this as I sit here waiting for the first coat of paint to dry. I'm going to finish painting this weekend, and then carpet it next.

Thought I'd update this... I've been playing a little, but mostly, I've been remodeling.

I withdrew enough to do the painting, the carpet, and buy a new chair, and I got a new desk as well. I've got some gift certificates to use, so I need about 180 to get the other monitor. I'm still picking the monitors, so that might change.

    Current BR is about 450...
