For one considering his over push on the river my guess is he was bluffing at the flush which you had. The biggest problem you have is playing in such a low limit table you get too much of a mixed breed of donkeys to really get much of a read on their hand considering ever two cards dealt are viewed as being playable hands. You fold was probably correct given the number of hand he could have played that would have beat you i.e. A6 s or os, Q6s which you will see a lot of in low limit games. His error which strongly indicates a weak player to me is his over bet, if he has the hand he made nothing additional if he is bluffing he is risking too much with nothing. When playing lower limit games such as you are in, I play tight and very agressively bet my big hands, limp with small pairs (most of the time) and take great advantage of having and taking position preflop if possible. If you are confident in your play I would strongly encourage you to move up to a .50/1.00 game or at least .25/.50. Stay away from the limits of less than .25/50 anything less you may as well play with you free chips as the quality of play if about the same.
Hope this is of some benefit to you. Good Luck
