    Default First Stars Sng

    Please analyze my play.

I don't like stars, but I finally could get a proper starting bankroll over there to grind my way up there too.

This is probably my first SnG which I could get ahold of a proper HH. I am mainly a UBer.

Sorry about the too many hands. Its the first time I posted an almost complete HH. Next time, I'll only ask advice for the key problematic hands.
I wanted to know is if you really would consider my game to be weak-tight or that I show proper aggressiveness. Basically, if my game is hopeless, bad, average or g00t.

When you have time m8s. TNX for looking into it in advance.

These are my opinions, I'm not qualified to give advise and please take everything i say with a large pinch of salt as I'm not very experienced...

    Anyway

Hand 1 : I don't really understand why you're folding with 7:1 pot odds. Thats enough to call before even thinking about implied odds.

3 : Pot sized bet seems a little strong. Ok though i think, esp at 5.5s.

4: I fold preflop. Even if the flop is kind to you, you're likely to be drawing with suited connectors, which you don't want to do early in a sng OOP.

5: I raise from the CO. Call is OK though. Might be worth a bet on the flop as it won't look like a cbet.

    8: Fold

10: Why overbet? 100 would do the job.

    12: Fold.

13: Minraise why? TJo UTG why? Just fold it.

15: Minbet gives a flush draw odds to call. Bet more on the turn. I like the flop check.

    17: Raise preflop.

19: Why only minraise preflop? I bet standard 300. You have to call the push.

    20-29: all good imo

30: I check behind on the turn but you may have had a better read etc etc

31-36 : . My HU game isn't the best when this deepstacked, buti raise something here. If you're purposefully playing smallball because your postflop game is strong then it's fine.

38: Why are you calling with high card king? If you thought he had nothing then bet, don't call with what might be a slightly better nothing.

    40: Bet the flop.

Is there more? IMO you were too passive heads up, but I'd be interested to see what others say. Everything I've said will probably be ripped to shreds in an hour or so!

There is more, yes. I deleted the rest because I thought those 40 were already a lot. I'll post the rest in a while.
Tnx for your time and insight badgers. Highly appreciated.

    I'll try to defend myself

1: its the first hand. I wanted to somehow see what he minraised with, why he played like that, how he plays etc.
8 & 12: it doesn't cost me a lot to get in the pot.
10: i bet here randomly. sometimes 2/3 pot, sometimes pot, sometime 1/1/3 pot.
13: there is some logic behind this raise, but its faulty. Essentially, JT is a great drawing hand. by driving other drawing hands ou, I may have a good drawing hand against something better with the right flop etc. (some people fold to any raises)
15: i wanted it to look like a complete steal, just to see villains reaction.
17: i only have 15x BB left. If I raise, say 3x BB, and somebody calls here, i may have to face difficult decisions
38: this is a nasty leak in my game i have to plug.

the minraises: i sometimes minraise, I sometimes bet 3x, i sometimes bet bigger. I think i tend to minraise a lot in certain situations, probably another leak
My dream... is to fly... over the rainbow... so high...

44: again, i wouldnt overbet. its just needlessly risking chips

47: I bet the turn and fold to aggression. The K is a good card to bluff. Just seems a bit passive.

    49: nh

    50: Bet flop or turn.

    51: lol at opps call.

And last but not least, don't minraise!

    lol yeah @ opps call.
I think he called because of hand 49. I played it the same way and he wanted to see, albeit costly, that I was bluffing him since I checked on flop.

The minraise is a leak I have to plug, I'm working on that. I'll work on my passivity too.
TNX for the advice! I'll never ever minraise again!

Why not? If your ambition is to move up as your BR grows, Stars is basically the only place that has decent traffic at the $50+ buyin level, and it's also one of the only places that gives decent b0nuses to SNG players.

OK, at badgers' request, I'll review the tourney and comment on badgers' comments.

    Anyway

Hand 1 : I don't really understand why you're folding with 7:1 pot odds. Thats enough to call before even thinking about implied odds. Agreed. I am calling every single time here. Folding is really losing value. How bummed would you feel if a 4 flopped?

2: Given the pot odds and the AI, calling is fine here but I don't understand why you call with K4s and not with 44.

3 : Pot sized bet seems a little strong. Ok though i think, esp at 5.5s. Raise more preflop. At 10/20 blinds I like 3-4x BB plus 1BB for each limper. That makes it 120-140 to go preflop. On the flop, I agree with badgers that full pot is a bit much, I think you can bet 2/3 pot and perhaps get opp to come along with something that you beat.

4: I fold preflop. Even if the flop is kind to you, you're likely to be drawing with suited connectors, which you don't want to do early in a sng OOP. Meh I think calling is OK since Hero is on the button. I'd like it more if there was one more limper in front though. BTW hero is not OOP, he is on the button.

5: I raise from the CO. Call is OK though. Might be worth a bet on the flop as it won't look like a cbet. Raise it for sure when folded to you in the CO! I would raise this from every position, even UTG. Sets you up to c-bet the flop. As played, I would have bet the turn for 60 or so after both opps check twice.

8: Fold Agreed. Fold for sure. I don't want to play suited gappers OOP to a raise from the big stack.

10: Why overbet? 100 would do the job. Agreed.

12: Fold. Agreed. If we had a bigger stack I would raise it though.

13: Minraise why? TJo UTG why? Just fold it. Agreed.

15: Minbet gives a flush draw odds to call. Bet more on the turn. I like the flop check. 150 to go preflop. No need to raise so much. As played, I would bet the flop for 250 hoping that opp thinks it is a c-bet and calls/shoves over, particularly if you had been c-betting a lot previously.

17: Raise preflop. Agreed. I am definitely raising this one and CALLING a push from the BB. As played, bet the turn after opp checks behind on the flop. The second K actually makes it much less likely that opp has a K.

18: Raise preflop when folded to you in the SB.

19: Why only minraise preflop? I bet standard 300. You have to call the push. Agreed.

    20-29: all good imo

21: Not sure that you really have a lot of FE here, I would probably just let it go.

25: No need to overbet the pot. You don't want to chase opp away here! With 1200 in the pot and a relatively draw-free board I make it 800 or so to go and CALL a push.

    [Qc 4c] BU (M = 29.20; f+F) - with the big stack I'd be raising this

26-27: I like. USE your big stack on the bubble!

28: Raise it for sure. Opp won't call/re-raise without a MONSTER hand which means you steal the blinds 95%+ of the time.

[Ad 3h] UTG (M = 31.20; F) - if it is still 4-handed I raise it for sure with the big stack on the bubble.

30: I check behind on the turn but you may have had a better read etc etc No need to overbet the flop. I check behind on the turn and bet the river.

31-36 : . My HU game isn't the best when this deepstacked, buti raise something here. If you're purposefully playing smallball because your postflop game is strong then it's fine.

31: Raise back preflop, then c-bet the flop and hope that opp comes along. As played I don't hate the flop check but I would raise opp's turn bet, you would HATE to see a fourth hit the river.

[Ks Kc] BB (Folded to Avi_Tristan.)

33: Raise for sure. Any ace, any king, any pocket pair, better queens and jacks, SCs etc are all raising hands for me HU with blinds this low.

    34. Take a stab on the turn after opp checks behind on the flop. Obv shut down if called.

    35. I don't hate completing preflop but I might raise also. Don't overbet the turn, it loses you a LOT of chips if opp has been slowplaying on the flop.

    36. DEFINITELY raise preflop 100% of the time here. Either raise or fold the turn, you have no draw - if you think opp is bluffing then make it 500 to go, if he doesn't bet without a hand, the fold.

    37. Don't minraise. If you're going to raise make it at least 500 to go.

38: Why are you calling with high card king? If you thought he had nothing then bet, don't call with what might be a slightly better nothing. Agreed. I would probably have bet the turn for 300.

40: Bet the flop. Agreed. Don't overbet the river.

Is there more? IMO you were too passive heads up, but I'd be interested to see what others say. Everything I've said will probably be ripped to shreds in an hour or so!

    46. Definitely don't minraise if you're going to try to steal. When you're OOP with a marginal hand you want to end it preflop. 800 to go preflop.

47: I bet the turn and fold to aggression. The K is a good card to bluff. Just seems a bit passive. Agreed.

49: nh Don't minraise preflop. 600-800 to go. 500 or so to go on the flop but turn is good.

50: Bet flop or turn. Agreed. Folding the real trash preflop is OK too, it sends a signal to opp that you're being at least somewhat selective.

51: lol at opps call. Agreed. BTW I REALLY like your river bet, a lot ofm players make the mistake of betting too small on the river with a monster hand and lose a lot of value.

And last but not least, don't minraise!
Agreed. A few other general comments:
    - If opp is weak/tight HU then bet the flop or turn. You will win the pot more than often enough to compensate for the times that opp has a hand (in which case shut down).
    - Remember the general principle of raising 3x BB plus 1x BB for each limper with monster hands. At 10/20 and 15/30 I might add an extra BB for good measure.
    - Don't limp JJ. For me, JJ is an open raising hand from every position.
    - No need to bet full pot/overbet as a c-bet/bluff. 2/3 pot will get a fold from opp pretty much as often and save you chips if you have to fold.
    - It is one of the great joys of SNGs to have the monster stack on the bubble. There have been many times I've gone from 6000 chips to 10,000 on the bubble because I've been able to massacre my opponents with raises, so unless you've got a true maniac at the table then raise very often from any position. Once you accumulate a 10,000 chips stack you're very likely to win the whole thing unless you get quite unlucky.

Other than that, well done on the win!

    Tnx for the analysis taipan.
I'll work on improving my bigstack play.
I'll take every tip in consideration, and in a month or two i'll post another sng to see if I improved a little, or not at all.

Sweet thanks Taipan. I misread hand 4, I thought he was open limping UTG, and I skimmed over a few things, something I must learn not to do when analysing my own sngs. This has been a great help
