Default Pipe Dream 8K to 400NL

Goal: Make 8K by September 18th to move up to 400NL.

This is an ambitious goal, but I figure I might as well set the bar high. Thanks to Zook for encouraging me to take shots. Hopefully I can get some responses/constructive criticism as I could really use the help. I don't get a lot of respect here despite being a winning player so it would be nice to learn why, but of course more importantly get better ;p

I was a losing 25/50nl player in october, then got better via FTR to be break even. I planned on moving my roll to Full Tilt in February but got my whole roll frozen in Netteller. I quit for 6 weeks and one day opened PS, forgetting I had $12 left in my Pokerstars account which I played SnG with that i placed in. I took those winnings to the 10NL tables and built a BR to $200 with for 25NL. I grinded for awhile up to $600, then lost a bunch, and seesawed for about 2 months going from 25 to 50nl until May when I solidly played 50NL. In June since I was doing well I moved to 100NL. I weathered a 10 buyin downswing and stayed profitable, and this July zook suggested I try 200NL.

I am now up $1900 4 days into moving up to 200NL. I know I'm probably catching some good cards, but I'm also playing well and getting away from hands when behind. I've hit a 4 buyin downswing and 3 buyin downswing and bounced back while keeping a positive attitude.

I'll be posting weekly updates on how my BR is doing, plus interesting hands.

First, I want to talk strategy and adjustments.

Seems like I'm doing well with my 200NL move because:

    - Nobody is really adjusting to my play.
    - I have done well as a result of adjusting to opponents play.
    - The player pool is smaller and players stay longer at tables I get to know players and their tendencies much better than at lower limits.

    My adjustments:
    - Avoid fighting over small pots as much because a lot of aggressive players do this and I don't find the pots worth enough versus the risk to RR them. This helps me when I do have a hand, I let them hang themselves and it inflates my medium pots enough to make up for the small pots I give up on.
    - If my read is aggressive player has air, let him fire away if I have a good hand like 2p and he often over-fires or overplays his hand if I act passive, as he's gotten me to fold in the past. Love turn check/raises on them
    - Tighten up to 17-21%, since everyone is so aggressive it seems a lot easier to get paid on my good hands. Lately I have been more like 15-19%, which I never have done before. 15% seems RIDICULOUS to me, and I would think this would be easy for others to adjust to, but they don't seem to notice because when I do enter the pot it's usually with a healthy 4xbb raise. So they forget I'm folding a lot unless they have a hud, and notice me raising at least as much as anyone except if a laggy player is at the table.

I'm raising any PP, sc 78s or better, AQ/AK in all positions.

    Hand ranges:

no limping, all raises unless I have a marginal hand or low pp with limper behind

UTG - All pp, AJS+ folding AJo. SC's 89+, sometimes suited broadway cards depending on the table.

MP - the same as UTG except I will play AJo and A10s, but it depends on table.

CO - Depends if folded to me, limped, or raised. Very wide if limped or folded, tighter if raised to. All pp, suited ace 10+ Any suited broadway combo, connectors: 78s+, one gappers 79+, occasionally a 2 gapper on a passive table.

Button - Depends if folded to me, limped, or raised. Very wide if limped or folded, tighter if raised to. All pp, suited ace 10+ Any suited broadway combo, connectors: 56s+, one gappers 78+, some 2 gapper. If folded to, I raise a range too big to write, but not trashy hands.

3 bet range - JJ+ AKs. I haven't been 3 betting AKo because a lot of people have been calling me down with pp and I feel like I can extract a lot of value from weaker aces if I don't 3bet AKo. I don't like playing AK/AQ for huge pots, I like taking small/medium pots with them and having my SC's and pp for big pots.

AKo 3betting just seems like its not that EV+, if it is it seems marginal and hard for me to play at the moment. Often we're up against a PP who will at least call our cbet. Then some crafty players will call a turn, and we have to consider a 3 barrell if we blanked out. When we do hit, it's usually obvious and opponent folds pretty quick. Not a lot of deception, and a lot of money is put up when we don't hit the flop much. I don't like 3 betting AKo, especially not AQ, even AQs. I think there is more value in the small/medium pots keeping other hands around with them. Everyone expects you to 3bet them, and when you don't they assume you can't have AK/AQ cuz you woulda 3bet.

    - I avoid calling the raises of others if I am holding easily dominated broadway cards unless they are suited/connected

I'll start it off with a hand that has an interesting history --

This was against Dayninja, a good 200NL reg who bets hard and cbets a lot. Definitely capable of making moves on people, and raising at weakness. Earlier in the day I got sick of him and left a table he was at, definitely takes control of a table, which I often don't mind (these people often overplay and pay off) but he was putting me to a lot of tough decisions and I sought softer action. Later he was at some good tables so I sat down anyway -- at 2 tables. At another table he was the PF raiser 3 times and 3 times I re-raised his flop Cbet by 3x. Twice he folded and once he called and C/F the turn. Since he is a strong player I assumed he was steaming and so next time I re-raised his cbet, it was going to be with a top grade hand like a set, 2p, or TPGK because I expected him to push next time I re-raised his flop cbets. I wasn't going to slowplay, I had the perfect setup next time I had the goods.

Well, luckily enough this happened 3 hands later. I knew when the flop hit EXACTLY how this hand would go, and knew exactly how to play it.

I'll be keeping up with your operation. I like these threads and you seem to be in the same boat I'm in (a new reg to 200NL and playing 6max).

One quick thing. In the hand posted above, why did you only raise to $6? I would think if I was gonna raise QJs in MP after an UTG limper and with 4 more to act I'd pop it up to at least $8 probably $9 or $10. Just wondering.

Thanks Pie, as long as one person is following along I'll keep it going I think these threads are great spots to think, sometimes I want to kind of think about poker but there isnt always a good forum to just shoot the breeze in general about various poker topics.

QJ -- Mis click. I click the slider on stars, not drag or type values and when MTTing I sometimes am sloppy. I'd have popped it to 8-10. Sometimes I do weird bets though to look donkish.

The best thing I ever got out of a poker video was realizing I could click the slider to increase/decrease values on Pokerstars. I used to have all these really irritating moments of not dragging it exactly how I wanted, then if I got a big stack I'd have to type because dragging's scale was offf...

any comments on my PF ranges? I sometimes also 3bet pp's in blind wars.

Good luck with your operation. I'll be taking some shots at 200NL in the near future so i'll also be keeping an eye on this thread.

Well, I took some really tough beats this last week

I lost a flopped full house to a rivered straight flush, lost set over set twice for over 150bb each time, lost K high flush to A when I had been re-raising the draw the whole way till it hit on river and he oddly called down... so that was about 10 buyins, I am a little over even now.

What do you think of playing against your tough opponents? Maybe I should leave for value, but sometimes I think you have to learn, especially if I plan to move up. I 4 table, so I feel like one tough opponent on one table is good for me, keeps my mind expanding without losing too much value. Dayninja is someone who is tough but I enjoy playing with. Anyone ever played him?

Hopefully this is a sign of better things to come:

We have a history, same guy from the top of this thread from the quads pot, where he picked the wrong time to make a move. He's one of my toughest opponents.

Whats the plan here? Opponent has been 3 betting very light, but often has strong hands too. Sometimes when he gets a string of good cards it looks like hes being overly aggressive, but he 3bets about the same range consistently. Anyone call? We do have position, but lots of his 3bet hands are AQ and AK

    River: ($82) Q (2 players)

    Final Pot: $82

Same opponent. Very frustrating -- He's totally capable of making moves on me, and plays back at me. Could this just be a move? River bet seems like trying to get paid by looking like a bluff though. Prolly a flop fold, but I hate folding to strength to him, or he will exploit big time.

    Turn: ($37) 7 (2 players)
BB bets $8, Hero calls $8.

    River: ($53) Q (2 players)

His turn bet seems weak, almost like a blocking bet. Anyone raise the turn here? Anyone bet river?

What do you think of playing against your tough opponents?
I don't like doing it. I try to find the fish, that's why I play on Party, Everest and iPoker. It's kinda tough playing against them too, it's tough to put them on a hand and you see a lot of odd plays from them.

That last hand with the small bet on the turn, most of the time I see that it's someone drawing and trying to get there cheaply. I've seen that quite a bit. If there aren't any draws out there it's usually weakness. I'll raise and they'll fold 90% of the time, the other 10% they push.

And the first two hands are pretty funny.

I will be reading also, seeing as we are both pursuing 400NL. Good luck!

I think the most important concept to understand at 200NL is effective 3betting. You seem to already have many small pot leaks under control, from what i have read of your posts. While we both play 200NL on Pokerstars, i would be happy to discuss general strategy. PM me if you are interested.

Hand 1). I would look at villain's bet sizing. <1/2 pot on turn, ~pot on river. Looks strange and i would look him up. This could be a missed flush or a tota bluff.

Hand 2). The thing about regulars and 3betting is that one specific hand could play entirely differently given previous hands during that session. For example, if villain had 3bet you several times already and you had folded every time, this would be a good spot for a 4bet. I don't like to take a weak-medium Ace to a flop in a RR pot since when an Ace hits it is tough to know whether you are against 9-9 or A-K when villain c-bets. Folding is almost always my default play in the beginning of a session, since i like to foster a tighter image so when i play big RR pots my bets get respect.

Hand 3). Lead for $40 on turn, fold to a push and shut down if called.

Hand 4). Lead flop for more. Calling turn is fine, and probably what i would do. I hate to raise and then get min reraised. Once villain checked the river it is likely villain is holding K-9/A-9 and a $35 bet on the river should have a positive expectation.

Oh, and I wasted about $1000 trying to take shots at 2/4 and 3/6, thats part of how im even. LOL. Definitely totally another level I don't know what I was thinking. No more until I am rolled for it and I'm on not scared money.

anyone else think those shots were a bad idea? guess I got a little excited there while i was up. Bye bye 200nl profit, back to the begining
  12. #12
I don't think it's a bad idea taking shots but didn't you JUST start 200NL recently? I might have waiting a little longer.

And in that last hand. That 4-bet pre-flop, you usually make such a small raise there in that situation? I think you're giving away your hand there.

    GL mixchange,

I havent had time to read through the whole thing buy dont be too downtrodding when nobody replies to your operation. there are so many now and reading and replying can take along time nowadays.

Dunno how you reckon your lacking respect of other players etc though i do admit i dont know much about yourself, see ye in the forums

Up $800 today at 600NL, hands posted there. So almost break-even above 200NL. Roll doing OK now. Need $7000 more for goal.

Five hands here in HS: http://www.flopturnriver.com/phpBB2/...oker-58212.htm

    ---------

    Goat,

I'm really confused by your post. I didn't mean that I didn't respect the majority of 200NL players, I consider myself still a below average 200NL player. What I was referring to are the small group of people that seem to log on and just gamble off their money with terrible hands in obviously behind spots, and 200nl seems like a high price to be doing that.

I totally respect your game and the people on FTR, as well as the vast majority of people playing 200NL. If I in any way disparaged anyone or if you saw me as rude in a game I apologize. I just meant the 8 3 hand above was silly and 200nl seems like pretty high stakes to me.

I know lots of blog/operation posts don't get replies on updates, I just hoped I would get some initial comments/replies on my general strategy.

I appreciate the time you and others have taken to reply.

Yep, I just started 200NL. You are right I probably should wait... I'm not getting trounced. I'm actually up $400 today in 3/6 and 2/4 -- but really I need to stop. Table selection very important as I've noticed the guys with 2-3 stacks are often rediculously good... totally school me

Yeah, I know that betting looks bad. Probably should have raised $30 more, sometimes I just don't want to 'lose' people with aces ;p I've had aces 3 times today at 3/6 and everyone folded to my 3bet everytime. Course, I wasn't 3 betting much so I guess its obvious to ppl at that level.

    Mix,

I wasnt or didnt mean to imply that at all. my impression was that ''other players dont seem to respect your game or players at 200NL or w/e have a lack of respect for your game''. maybe i got the wrong impression but what i was trying to say was the above aint true

You should try it goat, but table selection is really important on the 2/4 and 3/6. There are some really good regs like Reynolds XO that should just be avoided.

Welp, I had 4 bad beats for 4 stacks at 400NL plus one donked stack from tilt, so I'm really hurting right now, not . I thought I'd avoid posting those and post some semi- interesting hands
