Default calling a shove vs. shoving

I was thinking about this earlier. If I am planning to call someones shove, but decide to check in hopes that I might see a free showdown on river, but am willing to call shove, is it better to shove first (assuming I am oop)?

    No hindsight for the blind.
Very broad question, I guess the usual answer is "it depends".

More specifically I'd consider how aggressive villain is, ie will he be bluffing alot (or value shove the same or more hands than he'd call with) if we check? Will he ever check behind a better hand? Will he ever fold some better hands if we shove? Will he call worse?

In general I suppose it's better to shove yourself because most villains call more often than they bet.

Pretty simple answer actually. Normally the answer is yes its better to bet yourself, but if you feel like an opponent is going to bluff alot check (also thin vbetting comes into consideration but no one does at your stakes)

I mean in general bet when you think he calls a wider range than he bets and check if vice versa.
