Deepstack Venetian Tourney hand... KK 4 bet pot.
I played in one of the $340 buy in deep stack tourneys at the Venetian this week and had a strange hand come up somewhat early in the event. It was about 4 or 5 orbits into the tourney.
Blinds were 25/50 and effective stacks were about 6000 chips.
Reads-
utg- tight old guy, passive and only opens big hands
MP- semi aggro, cbet a K hi flop earlier and proudly tabled AK when folded around (for what thats worth) Played a lot of hands but seemed somewhat bad.
Action-
Tight old guy opens to 150 from utg. This guy hasnt played many hands at all and anyone paying attention should know that he is the tightest at the table.
The loose guy reraises to 450
Im on the button with KK. I repopped to about 1100... I was planning on actually folding to a shove from the utg guy, only cuz I couldnt see him showing up with less than AA if he did. I was relieved when he folded and the MP guy looked at me for a few seconds and called.
The pot is about 2400,and Ive got about 5000 behind. MP has me covered.
Then the flop comes really bad for me imo... TJQ rainbow. First question, is anyone betting this flop?? This was early in a deepstack tourney and one where I felt I had an edge on most of the field. I really did not want to go broke here. Especially on this board that I could not see one hand that was in his range that I was ahead of at this point. I figured him for a set, straight, or even a small chance of slowplayd AA. He checked and I thought for a bit before checking behind, knowing that any bet I made would commit me with my oesd.
Turn comes an 8 putting two diamonds on the board. He thinks for a second and then checks again. I really though about betting here, but once again, Im now still behind everything plus 88 and 99 now have me beat. It felt soooo weak, but once again I checked behind.
The river came an offsuite Q and he bet out 1000 into the 2200 pot which I called.
What do you guys think about my play? And how would you have played it differently??
