If you have a friend who knows about bikes then just have him come with you and tell you what to get, and then buy him lunch or something. This is what I did when I bought mine and I think it worked pretty well, it was good to have someone there who could me which ones sucked and which ones didn't.

I got a Cannondale, they make some pretty nice bikes for ~1K, not sure what you're looking to pay.

i would be pissed if someone stole my 1k bike. I wouldnt care if someone stole my 300 dollar bike. I guess i should have been clear on a price range and whatnot. I am not an avid biker or anything, just want a bike to hit trails with every so often. Also, i have no friends that are knowledgeable on the subject.

See if you can get one from your local Bikeshop Dealer. Also see if they have any models from 2007, you will save BIG $$. then check out the reviews on this website to see how the bike will do.
Do you want full suspension, front shock rear shock? that = $$$
    just a front shock = $
TREK is always a good bike
I have a Specialized enduro, it cost me $1800, hence I keep it in the garage locked up. This bike is awesome in the woods.

Trik its worth the money. When i was younger I got into mountain biking and became quickly addicted. My bike was stolen when my brother took it out of the garage to go to a party and didnt want to drive.

If you spend $300 you are buying a wal-mart bike. Spend the grand, get a nice light bike that is comfortable. Front suspension is pretty key, back suspension I never had but im sure its nice.

if you're still looking a buddy of mine got a Haro Flightline 2 for ~$350 I think, and I'm looking at getting the same one at some point. Real good bike for the price, front suspension is nice... and you can spend as much as you want on it adding rear suspension, disk brakes, etc etc with better versions

i ended up getting a 5oo jamis durango 2. Its a decent entry level hardtail. my buddy has a trek 4300 and my bike has better components and disc brakes so i think i did ok. here is a pic of the bike but mine is glack and green not black and red.
