Default Discovery Channel is the Gold Standard for Television

Between miniseries like Planet Earth and When We Left Earth and fun shows like Mythbusters and Deadliest Catch. I don't think any channel is better. (Including HBO and Showtime)

What's your favorite non-discovery channel and how do you wish it was more like Discovery?

    OOO GIRL YOU NASTY

Top Gear, and that's all i watch (they do have loads of other good shit though
But I came tothe conclusion that sitcoms are -EV, and fiction (for lack of a better word) are also -EV, and don't even get me started on Reality Shows.

Why the fuck should I care what the hell happens to Pam in the next episode?

The BBC fucking rules planet earth! Problem is 'BBC' isn't a channel. Four to choose from these days not including radio or the web.

BBC as a broadcaster tho >>>>>> every other broadcaster on earth.

    It isn't even close.

Discovery channel programming is dirt fucking cheap to produce, too. Most of the shows have no set, no writers, just a camera guy, a sound guy, and an awesome front man who can improv well. That formula has worked beautifully.

Theres basically no other channel that "could be more like Discovery" because theyre fundamentally different, theyve got a niche, and that niche is "show the behind the scenes of life" it's like asking MTV to do a show on the Australian Outback.

disc and all its spinoffs and even natgeo are great, but my appreciation for them have waned since i get my science fix from science forums; and that fix is much more up to date, thorough, and enlightening due to debate.

i will not tolerate claiming disc is better than hbo, but i will concede that they're different enough that they shouldn't be compared.

i mean cmon hbo had ROME and CARNIVALE i mean cmon whats better than lucius vorenus and brother justin dominatin shit?

hypography.com is probably the best ive found.

internet infidels or IIDB is another. this forum is actually a forum made for atheists and debate among atheists and other religions and stuff. they have a great science subforum, but hypography is an entire forum with more specific science subforums. iidb is excellent, but it does have more chaff since a decent percentage of users are continually trying to spout creationist/religious dogma and just general unscientific logic applied to numerous topics. its kinda fun to watch them get owned, but it gets old. hypography is more thorough on a purely scientific point tho, and is all around better imo.

im very pleased with science forums. real cool thing about them is that there seem to be a higher ratio of lurkers to posters than other forums. this is likely due to those who browse these forums are smart enough to know better than to speak when they are better off listening.

Nat Geo is the best channel because it has Air Crash Investigations:

Pilot of passenger jet to 14-year old son: "Would you like to fly the plane?"

Ground mechanic: "The screws I used looked like the right size to me."

Co--pilot to pilot: "Do you smell smoke?" Pilot: "Probably just the air conditiong. Let's keep going."

    Classic.

Rofl, I love that show in a perverse kinda way. Best one was when the BMI pilots experienced an engine failure, and then shut down the working engine :P

Air traffic control to pilot: "Are you declaring an emergency?"

    Pilot: "Not yet....ok NOW!"

Yeah, but this a BBC show.
Think I would've preferred seeing/listening to the version narrated by Sigourney Weaver but we got the Brit version narrated by David Attenborough.
    Still incredibly good though.

    wha-?

I watched the David Attenborough narrated series and it was his voice that was the biggest and only turn-off about it, imo. He sounded a little little too, well, old, in my opinion. He was born in 1926. When you're THAT old, it's pretty hard to not sound like it.

Discovery and NatGeo & their sister stations get about 50% of my TV time.

HBO has several other new series in various stages of development, including “True Blood,” a vampire drama scheduled to begin in the fall; “One Percent,” a drama about a motorcycle gang; “Last of the Ninth,” a drama set in the New York Police Department in the 1970s; and “David’s Situation,” a comedy by Bob Odenkirk and David Cross in which Mr. Cross portrays himself living with two roommates, one liberal and one conservative.

I'm looking forward to these new shows. I couldn't find any clips. Actually couldnt' find much info at all. David's Situation is by the guys from Mr. Show!

Yah, I pirated this thread which is now about HBOs new shows. HarHarr!!

BBC's nature documentaries are second to none.

Planet Earth was f'n fantastic. The mountain scene with that snow leopard chasing the mountain goat like thing down steep rocky slopes was the coolest nature chase scene ever.

    Oh found it: http://youtube.com/watch?v=VbR3cUnCdJk

(fastforward to last 30 seconds for the impatient)

The blue planet is as good. Ridiculously mind-blowing cinematography.

i been looking forward to true blood. actually i look forward to all hbo shows. also they're making a fantasy one that i htought was coming soon.

interesting they're making another odenkirk and cross thing since mr show kinda bombed. mr show wasn't that good, but it did have a couple incredible skits. like mt everest. cross no doubt is fucking brilliant as we can see from arrested development

I pay around £11/$22 a month for my TV licence. For this I get four main TV channels, two kids channels and a 24 hr news channel. I also get six 24 hr digital radio stations and the best news/information website available bar none.

Considering that the BBC's general output is of a far higher standard than anyone else's, this represents great value for money in my opinion. I pay £5 a month more to Sky and get a lot less for my money.

having a major news coorpration that is not actually run for profit is pretty awesome (objectivity ftw!)

how much of our media is owned run by news corp? (not saying news corp are inheritantly bad or anything/ just one company having so much power /political sway is)
