I've read articles that say the sun is actually 0.0000000093% hotter than it used to be and this "global warming phenomenon" you speak of is actually happening on every planet in the solar system.

You won't hear that from the mass media, though.

I would say that relatively few Americans have reason to disagree with the factual findings of the IPCC. As always, the question is what should be done about it.

There are plenty of theories about Earth still coming out of an ice age into a warmer period. While it's not the most prevalent, it's still out there.

Between the 1940s and 1970s there was a period of global cooling and people were crying about it then like they are about global warming today.

    From wikipedia...

    1975 Newsweek article
At the same time that these discussions were ongoing in scientific circles, a more dramatic account appeared in the popular media, notably an April 28, 1975 article in Newsweek magazine. Titled "The Cooling World," it pointed to "ominous signs that the Earth's weather patterns have begun to change" and pointed to "a drop of half a degree [Fahrenheit] in average ground temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere between 1945 and 1968." Though the article claimed that "[t]he evidence in support of these predictions [of global cooling] has now begun to accumulate so massively that meteorologists are hard-pressed to keep up with it," the Newsweek article did not make "environmentalist" claims regarding the cause of that drop. To the contrary, it stated that "what causes the onset of major and minor ice ages remains a mystery" and cited the NAS conclusion that "[n]ot only are the basic scientific questions largely unanswered, but in many cases we do not yet know enough to pose the key questions." Rather than proposing environmental solutions, the Newsweek article suggested that "simple measures of stockpiling food or of introducing the variables of climatic uncertainty into economic projections of future food supplies" would be appropriate. Nonetheless, the article ended on a cautionary note, claiming that "[t]he longer the planners (politicians) delay, the more difficult will they find it to cope with climatic change once the results become grim reality." [18][19]

In the late 1970s there were several popular (and melodramatic) books on the topic, including The Weather Conspiracy: The Coming of the New Ice Age.[20]

On October 23, 2006, Newsweek issued a correction, over 31 years after the original article, stating that it had been "so spectacularly wrong about the near-term future"

It's not suprising they were wrong. Trying to make predictions based upon the earth's temperature cooling for 30 years or warming over the past 30 years is retarded. Thirty years is absolutely nothing in geological terms.

I don't disagree with the IPCC. I do think that the significance of the warming is sensationalized in the media though.

no global warming theory worth its weight in feces is based upon data from a 30 year span. Youre drawing a direct comparison between two theories that are on the same general subject, yet have not much more in common. Its funny, the general populace will eat up shit like the atkins diet, yet ignore a fairly sound theory like global warming.
You-- yes, you-- you're a cunt.

I LOVE nitpicking on boost =)
Theres a new JAMA study that states that the Atkins isn't all bullshit.

Point taken. Doesn't change my opinion though. I don't think many people actually disagree that global temperatures are rising. There is a general sense of indiference to it though which is not the same thing.

That indifference stems from the fact that most people only concern themselves with things that directly affect them. They have a hard time understanding the implications of global warming and making the connection to their personal lives. With something like the Atkins' diet though they see "I can be less of a fat ass" and there is an immediate connection. Combine that with the fact that many people are inherently lazy and it's not hard to see why a diet composed of eating as much protein and fat you want appeals to them.

    word nuts, I feel you.

vincent, an unbalanced diet is bad, period. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to come to this conclusion. The pounds wont stay off once you stop doing the atkins diet. There are short term gains, thats it.

    Cliff notes at bottom

Actually I think what one of the most recent studies stated was that Atkins was easier to follow and thus sustainability was more possible than compared to other diets (2nd hand info from nutrition prof). Also the intake of protein supresses appetite which lowered caloric intake overall and its possible that this lowering of caloric intake will progress even AFTER you decide to go off the atkins diet, which is a positive. This is one of the reasons why its considered a better diet.
Also by controlling the TYPE of protein you intake and taking 100g/day carbs you can counteract the common negatives attributed to atkins.

Cliff notes: Atkins isnt entirely bullshit, and it doesnt need to be "short term".

Newsweek or w/e was worried about global cooling, because they probley should have been. All data suggested we were about to experience a period of global cooling. But we didn't, it started getting warmer, and fast.

There is no data that proves global warming is man-made beyond a doubt. But all data suggests it is, so we should go with that.

It's obvious that the corporations have sucked our world dry with their puppeteering of all forms of media. The oil companies have been supressing green-friendly cars that run on water, man! They're bring this world to it's knees just to pad their bottom line. It's disgusting.

I have lost over 30 pounds in since Jan. 1st on the Atkins Diet. If you follow it correctly, you add carbs slowly which helps to keep the pounds from coming back. Also, no white starchy food ever. I feel great and my cholesterol levels are fine.

As for global warming, I don't know who I believe, but I would tend to believe the side that doesn't have much to gain from it.

Atkin's is without a doubt, the best diet for the human body.People will never believe this because they believe the big money. Lobbyists for the sugar, dairy and corporate food companies will never let their profits die. Look into Dr. Volek, U of Connecticut. See what he's been researching and proving for years, and the AM Journal will not touch his scientific research. Fat is cash, Pharmaceuticals rule the world, keep em fat, medicated and on US soil.

Did cavemen eat processed foods with trans fats? No, they ate saber tooth tigers and woolly mammoths. Which lead to more methane gas, which increased greenhouse levels, which created the hole in the ozone, which increased the globe to warm.

See, Atkins and global warming goes hand in hand.

sprayed thanks for tying the atkins diet in with the global warming, because I was seriously confused on how atkins had anything to do with global warming.

but since were talking about Atkins, I too did the atkins and lost 30lbs in 4 months and over 2 yrs not on atkins gained back 25lbs eating anything I want. I think its time to get back to Atkins

There is no doubt that the Earth is in a warming trend. But hard to tell if its caused by us or just a normal variance of the earths weather trends.

*edit: I posted too soon. as unbelievable as it may seem, this article became a right vs left bout. story goes the right says global warming is bullshit, the left says global warming is real and its here. the writer is reportedly from the right.

    a choice comment follows;

    > "...you guys still haven't provided any data that backs up the theory that "global warming" is more than a cyclic event."

You're mistaking your massive ignorance for what the scientific community, and informed lay person, knows. I'd provide links, but you wouldn't read them - or you'd dismiss them as 'liberal propaganda'. If you had any intellectual curiosity or honesty, you'd have done your own research by now.

Every national science academy of every major industrialised country on the planet confirms recent climate change is due to human activity.

Provide evidence that they have all been lying in unison for decades or that they are all wrong. Just a scrap of evidence?

I don't need to wait for your response - you don't have any. All you've got is ignorance, delusion and Dunning Kruger.

Fortunately, people like you and Asher are becoming ever more irrelevant as the rest of the planet starts working towards solutions.
