Yeah, not a fun story....
Such a freak accident too. I went home yesterday and took my cord down off my treadmill and just laid it on the ground instead of hung up....
I'm not usually a paranoid person at all but I have a son who is the same age...it just kinda hits you.

That guys life is one disaster after another, some made by himself some not....
I dont know how close he was to the daughter or if he was involved at all.

So basically she was playing by the treadmill and was strangled somehow by the power cord? That's one hell of a freak accident.

A number of years ago a child died in a rural town close to where I live b/c he went to the bathroom at his school, and started playing with those old cloth hand towel driers (the kind that's looped in the unit...where you pull out a new section of clean towel and the used dirty part gets fed back into the unit).
He hung himself on the towel while playing with it...it happens

evolution happens to populations, not individuals. its the process by which ecosystems favor certain biological characteristics. random events of small scale are not natural selection

Yeah, but who was the evolutionary failure here?

I'm all for survival of the fittest if someone is super sick, like with cancer, or some crazy blood disease, I'm also for survival of the smartest/fittest after the kid has been given an appropriate chance to use the tools they need to survive.

At 4 years old, it is just as much of a tragedy for a healthy member of the herd to die, as it is for an unhealthy member to continue living.

Well... Let's see... three responses...

Chaos of life... I like that idea but it kind of supports the same theory, that the strongest will survive, but yes, many will die in weird and unpredictable ways...

As towards random events of small scale... well... if you add up how many people/children died because of random accidents of this nature... then it is an evolutionary effect imo... true that items such as disease and pesitlence have a much bigger effect, but I do think that the kid who burns his hand on the stove then reaches again towards the burner is one who isn't going to make it... evolution at it's simplest... but you're more correct than I am.

Who? Well Ragnar i think Mike Tyson is an evolutionary failure... physically strong, mental midget. So I think the kid got the short end of the stick being born to him.

But in essence, after re-reading my original post, it comes off kind of arrogant, I guess my real feeling is, I don't really care what happens to Tyson or his kid... and that probably makes me a dick.

I feel bad for Tyson, no-one should have to lose his child, but I agree, it's his parents evolutionary failure here, not hers, she was probably healthy as a horse, and going to grow up lead a healthy, normal, exploited by reality television based life.

This misses what the ToE is. It is a description of the process of the biodiversity and descent of life by means of genetic mutations being selected for by nature, and, very importantly, ToE must be looked at through the lens of populations, not individuals.

This shows that small scale events that are indistinguishable from randomness for individuals are not evolutionary events, yet large scale events, like the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs, play major roles in evolution.

You can be technically correct that small scale randomness plays a part in evolution, but it misses the point of the theory since it says that evolution is essentially anything that happens to individuals, while the ToE can only calculate populations.
