    Default Laptop repair

About 2 weeks ago my laptop of 6 years screen flickered and shut off. I have it set so closing the lid does nothing, but if I push the "lid is closed" switch the screen will turn on for about one sec. When it was on the screen was dim, and the power and "busy" lights were dim.

I replaced the LCD inverter today and now the screen is bright, and the "busy" led is light, but it still won't stay on unless I keep pushing the lid closed button. The battery LED sill appears to be dim (it's a real old battery, but the laptop will work off just the AC with no battery so I don't think that's the issue).

Any ideas? I would like to avoid buying a new one because replacing it would be ~$1500

No idea, but is there something special about it? Ordinary laptops cost about half that now.

16" monitor, 1600x1200. Some nostalgic value.

Most 15" are 1200x800 which is 50% of the area. If I was getting a new laptop I would like a small one, not replacing the big one I have.

Cliff Notes: I'm an electronics nit

I had a similar problem with my not-so-old IBM and I paid a repair shop a diagnostic fee for them to tell me it was a motherboard failure and not worth fixing.

ya, this. I really dont see how you figure that replacing a 6 year old laptop will cost you 1500$.. I mean the laptop would have to be like 20k new for that to make sense.
You-- yes, you-- you're a cunt.
