    Default Let's Celebrate 10nl!

I'll be posting something similar in my OP , but I thought I'd post here to celebrate my graduation to 10nl. For those who don't know, I'm not a big grinder. Most days I get in about an hour, but since I've moved and haven't found work yet, I get to play about 3 hours spread out throughout the day in usually one hour sessions.

I started out playing 2nl back at the end of January this year and now have progressed to 10nl playing mostly 1 table. I've tried multi-tabling, but I've never liked it. Obviously it's taken me longer, but I'm fine with that. Here's my stats. The 10nl and 25nl were played before I knew any better, sometime last year.

I'd like some feedback on any leaks anyone sees. I know that 10nl won't be nearly as easy for me. I play nearly exclusively 6-max. I find it's more interesting and goes faster than full ring. If it helps, I can post an image based on position to help spot leaks.

Also if any noobs have some general questions about 2nl or 5nl, I'd be happy to help based on my experience. That's my way of giving back to FTR for all the help I've gotten.

    Cheers!

To start, I like your style. You're playing a low number of tables, learning, and crushing the game. Nice. You can always add more tables later as you go.

To answer your question, though, unfortunately, I've come to the conclusion that, generally speaking, you can't look at stats to improve your poker game. If you're a losing player and there's an obviously glaring problem like 75% VPIP with 50% PFR @ full ring, then maybe you can be Captain Obvious. But, outside of that, stats DO NOT translate into wins and vice versa. You shouldn't try to FIX any stats. Some games will dictate a very loose style or tight style and with enough imagination and skills you can probably employ any style to be a winner. There's too many factors of game selection, playing styles, and the like to say definitively that any range of stats is good or bad.

But, let's face it, if you've played over 12k hands @ 35 bb/100 or 17.5 ptbb/100, then you obviously need to keep doing what you're doing at THOSE games. You're about near the top of what you can probably make @ those games and you don't need to spend any more time trying to get 50 bb/100 instead of 35 bb/100. It's time to move on to the next stake AFTER you have the bankroll to do so. You may find as you move up that the same strategies don't apply as well either because the games are tougher or because you're playing an exploitable style that bad players don't know how to exploit, but cross that bridge when you get to it. Poker is about solving those types of problems and games.

It's great that you want to improve your game, but posting some sick stats and winnings just isn't going to do it. You're going to have to keep playing, keep studying, maybe bounce some interesting hands for analysis, and just keep doing what you're doing and problem solve.

I will point out that I think you need $300 or 30 full buy-ins before you move up to $10NL. According to your summary, you only have $209.06. I strongly suggest having the full $300 before you move up. If you continue to have the success you've been having @ $5NL, it will only take 4k hands or so. I'd also consider adding another table for the rest of $5NL. You should have adequately mastered 1 table by now and 2 shouldn't be a big deal.

Congratulations and good luck moving forward.
    - Jason

Thanks, Jason. I've only made $200 playing cash, but my BR is higher than that due to SNG play. So I'm actually over $400. I agree that stats alone can't tell the whole story. I think the very best players strive to react to the table they are sitting at. Sometimes tighter, sometimes looser. It's what I try to do.

Obviously, I've got a long way to go so I am going to keep learning from my play and more importantly, from my opponent's play. Some day, I hope to get up there with the big boys!

Good work so far. With regards to the whole multitabling thing: when you're comfortable at 10NL, I might try 2 tabling for a while if you feel you are playing your A game. SLowly, your brain will adapt to more tables and it really does help in getting more volume in, and thus seeing your results over a larger sample and progessing through the limits.

Putting in more hands also helps to get your head around vairance before you reach stakes where the money will be of more real life significance. Most new players have yet to get to grips with the prospect of having 10K hand losing streaks depsite crushing a limit. It helps to learn about yourself as a player and how much that in sort of thing tilts you and then subsequently, the steps you can take to minimise any tilt that might occur.

I used to struggle with anymore than 1 table aswell and find that I couldn't focus, but it honestly does come with practice, so I'd give it a go especially if you're restircted for time having a family and hopefully a full time job soon alsol. I now feel fine with up to 4 tables and sometimes more if I'm really focussed so I wouldn't yet rule out that multitabling is not for you.

Although you've had good results at 2NL and 5NL over 12k hands, just be aware that you are running good! 40bb/100 is in no way easily sustainable over the long run (even at these stakes) and your sample size is small. So I supppose what I mean is, don't be disheartened if you see that win rate drop. For 10NL I think 12bb/100 (6BB/100) is a good and realistic target.

Good luck with the 10 Ennels and get that volume in while you still have the chance!

i, for one, would like to hear what you guys all think sustainable winrates are in BB/100 these days.

used to be that double digit, through 25NL, was the norm and highly sustainable. obv, the games have tightened. but, how much??

and, nice crushing, tuuk. white hot!

That's the problem I'm running into. It's not many hands, but I do think I'm playing well and I have hit some negative variance over time, but I try to control the odds as much as I can. Sure it's not always possible, but I try not take risks for all my chips if I don't have to. At this level, it's almost always better to just fold and wait for a better opportunity.

Having said that, I know I'm running really, really good and there's no way I can keep it up. I'm just happy to ride the wave as long as I can. Whenever I get too confident, I just fire up a $3.40 turbo SNG and get bitch-slapped by set over set or my A-K losing to A-Q.
