Default Online Poker Study - All players are welcome

Hi everyone, my name is Melinda Morgan. I’m a PhD student in psychology at the University of Ottawa in Ottawa, ON, Canada, under the supervision of Dr. Celine Blanchard. I’m doing an online study investigating Decision-Making in Poker Players for my dissertation. I’m an avid player myself and love this game.

All poker players are welcome at any skill or experience level. If you are interested in taking part, here is the link: https://www.psychdata.com/s.asp?SID=133190 It takes about 20 minutes or so to complete the online survey. This study is completely anonymous.

Please feel free to share the link with any of your poker buddies!

    Take care,

    Melinda

Some of these questions are vague and can be taken in various ways.

    for example,

    5. I play, but sometimes I ask myself if I should continue to play.

This can be taken as, "I routinely evaluate my game and state of mind while in play and make a decision on whether I should end my session or continue playing." Or, "This game frustrates me and I sometimes contemplate never playing again."

Obviously theses are very different questions, and so I worry what you may infer from the results of this survey.

Furthermore, in a section of the survey we are told that there are no right or wrong answers, however this is not true.

    8. In a game of chance, which option would you choose?
OPTION A: An 80% chance of winning $4,000

    OPTION B: $3,000 for sure

There is certainly a correct answer..

    Also, lol:

    12. What stakes do you currently play in tournaments and/or Sit & Go's the most?

    Micro stakes ($0.10 -$1.00 buy-in)
    Low stakes ($2.00 - $5.00 buy-in)
    Medium stakes ($6.00 - $20 buy-in)
    High stakes ($21 - $500 buy-in)

    ya - I got bored.

Questions seemed pretty ridic and could be taken in different ways.

But Melinda, can I be the 1st to say that Boobies would greatly improve this thread?

further comments .....Since you are puting this out to a worldwide audience ....have you considered that by stating the US government is fighting a disease you could invoke a different response from US hating individuals than from a US population. I.e middle Eastern residents may opt for the 2/3 chance to kill kill more americans. Would it have been better to have phrased the question "your government is fighting disease" to take any racial bias out of the answers.

Similarly .....you get a 1 week tour of England or a chance at a tour of europe.... what incentive is there for UK residents saying that they want a tour of their own country. they can do that any time for relatively little cost. Again that could skew the results on that question for UK respondents.
Also , could the results be skewed on a language basis, especially if most of your responses come from the US, Do you want to go to a county which speaks the same language or to several countries that don't speak your native tongue. You could be getting some answers based on a consideration that you haven't allowed for .

For the poker questions, the suits don't show up in certain browsers. You might as well throw out all of those results.

Also, Willbur is right about his improvement suggestion.

Also, spoiler alert...in the end, Kepler did it.

When choosing my ethnicity, "Native, innuit, somethingorother" was on the list twice, just while we're all nitpicking.

in ur accounts... confiscating ur funz
that survey is slow as balls.

And yup... many vague questions. I do sometimes ask myself if I should continue, but probably not for the reasons that people who read this will interpret. - You are dealing with a bunch of pathological overthinkers. Keep that in mind.

I think the process of learning poker is great for relieving tension and relaxation. But that's more of a result of having played the game for a long time rather than a direct cause and effect of sitting down and playing. - Like studies of various TuffFish videos on youtube will show.

In the what-would-you-choose part some answers are dependent on a persons networth. Some people can gambol on $4000 if the EV of gambling is higher than the payout without taking a risk. If you just want the general tendencies without the persons financial status influencing the answer, then make the examples a smaller amount... or apples instead of dollars

The raise and bet sizes I can choose from are very creative
I'll just treat it like really weired spread limit. - The answers you'll get on those will be fairly random because of lack of information and lol-betsizaments.

Oh, and the memory exercise, if it is one, should probably contain less general knowledge and maybe not be taken from the most popular pop-science book ever.
