You set your preferences for players, 1st to worst, and then the picks rotate until everyone has 20. To help with this, they have them listed in the software based on last year's stats, best players at the top, but you can move players up or down per your own ratings. After the draft, anyone can pick up any free agents that are left since your team may be unbalanced, or some decent player might be left. You can only have 20 players on the squad. So after the draft everyone will have a unique squad. 1st pick in 1st round is usually last pick in 2nd round, and so on.
The drafts usually have a start time and a 2 minute limit for each pick - if you're online when the draft happens live, you can manually select your picks (maybe grab a defender higher than you rate him 'cuz you already have 3 strikers you rate). If not, the computer picks your highest rated player in each round.
I'm pretty sure in private leagues you can choose when you want your draft to happen so everyone can be online for it.
Trades are legit, too - but no cash changes hands in the London Times version. You have to make some kind of package deal to trade players between teams.
