UTG Limps then re-raises @ 5NL

This happened twice today with different players.

UTG limps, then it is folded to me in CO (the other time in BU). I have good cards so I raise to 4xBB. It is then folded to UTG who re-raises about 3x my raise.

Both times, I had only about a dozen of hands on the villain with nothing of note seen. So no significant reads.

What should I make of such a move? Should I simply consider it a normal re-raise? What kind of range can I put villain on?

Both times I ended up folding because my cards were not good enough to 4bet and I was lost in terms of putting villain on a range because of their weird move.

Any help would be appreciated.

At this level, I'd say a limp reraise (a move of Hellmuth like proportions) is likely to indicate a monster. Often you're looking at KK+ here, maybe just maybe JJ-QQ, AK, but in my experience it's the former.

With no reads, folding seems like the best move, but you could 4bet in some circumstances.

I dunno, I've seen people limp/raise with various pocket pairs, and as light as AJs, on a reasonably regular basis. I've even seen the great Boris Becker do it with 44. How I laughed.

Usually I put people on 88-AA, and 22-77 AJ-AK can be added for some villains. If it's absolute trash, then it's awesome poker.

What you've seen people do that UTG?

Tbh, there are two ways OP could find out whether villain is FOS:

1) Continue
2) Let someone else do the dirty work for him at a later time.

Readless, I'm taking option 2 most of the time depending on stack sizes.

Yes, I've seen both 22 and AJs limp/raise from UTG, I'm sure people do it lighter but I'm yet to see a showdown worse than these hands from an UTG limp/raiser.

I guess more often than not it's the top of villain's range, but you can't just assume a limp/raise from UTG is always KK/AA, because often it's weaker pairs.

The cool part about this spot is that your never exploited by folding anything below KK+. His range is heavily weighted towards KK+ but with some random outburst cus its 5NL aka tiltissues/having fun/etc etc. As i said earlier, folding ATC below KK+ will not break your game @ 5NL, not at all.

Fish limp/raise with a lot of hands. Some only do it with the nuts, but way more do it with dominated hands. Just today a fish limped utg, I raised in the BB to 5x with AQs, he jammed for 40bb. Snap call, he flips over A5o. Fish have wider ranges than we think when they take these lines. But, I guess it's okay to fold without reads, esp oop.

In my experience Fish get into a pushing mode when they get down to 40bb. It's also "cheaper" for them to put moves on you if they constantly see you raising their limps. You will see a lot of Ax, Kx, PP, and sometimes random spazz. 90bb+ and then you will see more AK KK+

That's right, the shorter their stack, the less it is KK+. And the fishier they are the less is KK+. Also if the pot is multiway it is more likely to be a nutty hand.

I'd be very cautious continuing against a full stacked opp in EP who limp reraises, unless I had reads. Some players abuse this though and bluff limp-reraise.
