Also, what I find weird us that I'd actually like to split if I was in this situation, just cos I'm a nice guy, assuming I don't dislike my fellow contestant of course. Why would anyone expect a poker play who understands ev to split? I'd probably try to negotiate with her, ie tell her if she buys me into a $3k poker game HU against her I'd split and let her steal, knowing full well she intends to steal anyway. There's never ever ever ever any reason to split, right? The only time you get money with a split is when the other person also chose split, and in that case you get more money if you choose steal. Any other situation you're not getting money, so fuck it.

Without reading comments and assuming we're going at this from a simple poker-oriented, maximize-eV-perspective, I don't see how it's ever correct to do anything other than to Steal.

If it were something you were doing over and over and over and over again in consecutive trials wtih the same teammate (aka, if there were meta-game involved) it might be interesting what strategy you can employ to get them to trust/like you enough to choose split the most amount of times while still being able to steal enough times to maximize value (without turning him against you of course). In a single trial run, steal baby steal.

From an ethics standpoint, a Kantian would say that it's best to always take split because your choices are a representation of how you believe all humans should act and you would obviously prefer all humans to pick split. Also, from a utilitarian standpoint, everyone picking split maximizes the amount of money for humans as a whole (assuming that any system that allows for stealing "sometimes" creates a non-zero chance to have both people pick steal).

I don't really know what other ways to look at it.

Yeah for sure, I'd offer 50% because I'm weak, but that's instantly my strategy. If they disallow that, try to convince them I'm a math nerd and tell them anecdotes about a beautiful mind that split is proven to be the best, and then throw it all to the wind and choose steal at the end ldo.
