    Default PT for NL?

Hey, someone posted that PokerTracker for NL is not very useful... is this true? I was going to purchase it until I read that, and now I don't know. Does it rate NL play? Thanks guys.

I was wondering about that comment as well. I think it was hyper that said it's more useful for limit hold'em.

it's useful in the sense that you can observe hands and create a huge database of all the players.

stats like VPIP, PFR, postflop aggression can help you pinpoint exactly what kind of player you are up against. this feature easily makes PT pay for itself. but beyond that i don't believe PT to be very useful for NL.

in limit, mistakes like cold calling can be very costly and PT is good for pluggin up things like that.

NL cold calling is not an error (for the right price anyway) because you have tools like bluffing at your leisure, and implied odds is their entire stack. you can always try to "buy the pot", which is near impossible at limit.

the main difference between NL and limit is showing down hands. you will need to showdown the winning hand in limit the mass majority of the time. in NL you will be able to buy many little pots, and win or lose big when you go monster vs monster, ie lose your stack or double it up.

it's because of this huge variance on a hand to hand basis that take NL stats much longer to converge, compared to its limit counterpart. it will take a long time before you can get any meaningful results. heck even 10k hands in limit is just *starting* to get meaningful results. i can only expect it to be much greater in NL.

I held off on buying PT for a very long time partly because I had heard that it was "limit-centric" (I believe Fnord described it that way).

It definitely would be more helpful for limit, but it is designed to work with both NL and Limit. One of the problems with no limit is that agressiveness depends on not only how often you bet, but also how much you bet relative to the pot. PT does not really have any way of using bet amount to make any meaninful calculations. That really would be my only gripe about not being optimized for no limit.

But when used with playerview, you can see what your oppents VP$IP and Preflop % is while you're sitting at the table. That is invaluable for both NL and limit. I also like how it keeps track of how much money I make per session, per hour, per week, per month, per 100 hands, by position, etc..

Is it any use for poeple that don't play on one of its support online rooms?

I play on PlatinumPoker which I don't think is supported. Woudl PT be of any benefit to me or should I just switch rooms?

No PT is useless with unsupported sites. Besides, you should probably switch rooms for the increased number of fish at the other sites, PT compatibility is just an added bonus.
Is that guy still part of the forum??
