the local bar games w/ all the "big shots"

i currently live in atlanta, and since i recently turned 21 - i've been doing alot of bar hopping these days. since the WPT, hold'em has become so popular that all the bars in atlanta take turns holding "hold'em tournament nights".

since i've just recently turned 21 (and i look pretty young for my age....probably like 16-17 to most people), when i sit down at these tourneys i get no respect whatsoever. EVERYBODY there thinks they know everything there is to know about the game.....talking about how to bluff, how to slowplay, etc etc. bunch of crap. (one guy who was full of sh#t in my opinion, even invited me to come over to his house to play in a $500 buyin game....ya right)

the thing is, i sit down at these tables, and these guys just think they're like poker gods or something. they chasing cards, talk smack, and go all in when they hit a TPTK, etc etc. then they sit there criticizing my play and about "oh, you play too tight...we all know when you have a good hand". (too bad they didn't realize that after the blinds got high enough to put dents in stacks, i was bluffing a majority of the time) then after i beat them at the final table - THEN they ask me what my name is, etc etc. seriously, no respect whatsoever - and all just because i'm young.

sorry this turned into a rant , but do any of you guys get the same thing in your home town?

(seriously though, these bar tourneys are a joke and shouldn't even be considered real poker......anybody here could probably easily play the entire tourney without looking at their hole cards....they wear their tells like a neon sign)

Yea, I am the same as you in that regard. Its hard to keep your mouth shut when you know youre with a bunch of shit talking fish that have money in their pockets with your name on it.

We've had bar tournaments here for a while. Same thing happens to me. But I don't look for respect, or care about getting it.

It really only happened when I moved on from these free games with 60+ entries that pay 2 spots. And crappy prizes at that. I did some other poker, than came back on a whim.

I sat down realizing that I'm better than anyone there, and my 2 friends made an outlast bet. Turns out, I didn't care about the game at all. I only needed to outlast my 2 friends. That's the only part of the game I cared about.

respect? well, i just thought it was kinda ironic and funny that the big talkers wouldn't shut up until you "beat them at their own game". not exactly looking for respect, just got a chuckle that none of them would even greet me until i took their stack.

for the second question....i was actually hoping for some good people to be perfectly honest. it was a free tourney, and if there were somebody good....maybe i could have learned something new for free.

well...i'm currently only 21 and a college student as well. $500 is pretty much my entire bankroll and according to your bankroll guide rilla, i shouldn't be playing in that game even if it is fishy

I think the gist is not that you should be hoping for that invite, but that you should welcome the chance to play against people who think they rule but don't. So what if they respect you? Big deal...if they don't, it'll be that much easier to take their chips.

Don't play poker for respect -- play for fun, or play for money, or both. Screw respect.

Oooooooh, you're talking about being treated in a manner that acknowledges and affirms your inherent dignity as a human being.

I love the poker 'gurus' that discuss how to play at the table. While they're busy making fun of me for being young, I'm sitting back collecting the information about how they play.

i find it very, very hard to keep my mouth shut at games like that, where know-it-alls spout off their strategies and criticize other people's play. it is extremely UNprofitable to open you mouth in such circumstances. it is VERY profitable to listen to what they say, since they are revealing their own playing behaviors, watch and verify that that's what they are doing, then exploit them by either bluffing if they're tight or calling/value betting if they're loose. e.g., guy says, "i'd never fold any queen pre flop!" raise him even more than normal with your AK.
