I thought the chances of him having 9 Q were slim enough to push at the river especially seeing as he only had another $6. in hindsight this was very stupid.. one of them situations where its either a split pot or im beat?

You got it on your last sentence. Two pair is just calling unless your opponent is special. So you're probably splitting here and don't really have a chance of pushing your opponent off his hand.
