The making of a monster.. my soupie-enhanced MTT experience

Soupie requested that I post what I learned last night so here it is....

I played in the 10$ freezeout on Stars and did pretty well for myself busting out 27th trying to push-steal some blinds when I ran into QQ on the button. The guy had me outstacked by about 3K at that point and took most of his time before deciding to call me. He actually went on to win the thing... so essentially I was one double up from contending for first.

The major thing I learned was that I have only been playing tourneys with the two dealt cards and not using every advantage I had. Once you have established yourself at a table you can use a couple other cards which turn that 24o in your hand into rockets. Optimally using your stack size, position, and opponents fear of busting are more important to success late in a MTT than the occasional cowboys or rockets you get.

A couple smaller points I picked up:

1) Constantly re-evaluate where your stack is and when it will become ineffective as a tool of fear against opponents.

2) There comes a point where a 3x steal isn't gonna work. This occured at about 3 tables left for me when I tried to steal from a guy who had me doublstacked. Time to start push-stealing against the small stacks if you have time or anyone if you are in danger.

3) Don't try to steal from a person who won't give it up. There are 2 instances of this, calling stations and very big stacks. Big stacks believe that the relatively small investment to possibly catch a flop hard and bust a smaller stack is worth the risk of another 2BBs. Calling stations need no explanation. This all leads back to #2.

4) Early coinflips are for the birds, shortstacks and the other 1260 people who busted out before me. So what if you've folded for 3 circuits without a blind steal opportunity and look down to see AKs, if you are not in danger of becoming ineffective soon, fold that to an all-in that may disable you.

5) . People are not very observant. I think one person figured out that I was position raising with rags and re-raised me all night (or he could have just had a hand). I avoided stealing his big blinds and kept on abusing the rest of the table.

6) If your steal gets called by the blinds (average stack) and the flop is all raggs, blind checks, bet like you own the pot and you will more often than not.

7) Abuse the small stacks when you can

8) Pick up any and all chips that haven't been claimed by someone else.

9) Once you feel comfortable that you can take a hit or two from a re-raise on y0ur steals, show those rippys when you drag pot after pot and wait for them to start playing back at you. Then play into a big stack with your good hand and double up off his frustration.


Thanks to everyone who was playing with me on IRC and to soupie for the pep-talk. You guys are great. Once I figure out how to get the actual hand history from stars I'll post up all the rags I was raising with. I was using a modified LeFou raising scheme, where I would raise if there was a red OR a black card in my hand.

I believe that I had about 7 high-quality hands throughout the tourney with an early KK to triple up and another on the bubble to bust out a guy. No rockets that I remember and 2-3 AK's (ironically , all of which I had to fold to major aggression early).

Here are the stats...

223 hands played and saw flop:
- 7 times out of 23 while in small blind (30%)
- 10 times out of 25 while in big blind (40%)
- 20 times out of 175 in other positions (11%)
- a total of 37 times out of 223 (16%)

Pots won at showdown - 10 out of 14 (71%)
Pots won without showdown - 34 <<<---- where the money is baby

Very excellent post sed and certainly worth consideration as a sticky although if too many people read and follow your advice, several of us will have to adapt our play.

The truth is the top players play this and have for years to a degree. You have got to be willing to take your shots when the blinds get high.

this is the hand that undid me. first at a new table, in good position for a steal but didn't notice I was stealing off of a monster stack... dammit.

I think I should have pushed over his bet after the turn since I had half my stack in. Just the 4 to the straight had me thinking I was destroyed and he wouldn't put it down.

I think I managed to hold my own during the middle part of the tourney but my endgame obviously needs some work. It is primarily weak because I've never been there looking to win, only survive.

In hindsight, I should have 3x raised on the AQ (second to last hand) and tried to get some action off of that. The raise, push, push all in a row was probably not the brightest thing unless I hit a monster on that last push. Live and learn.

Just to add a little perspective Sed, Last night I went out in 10th place in a 224 person small MTT on Absolute. Near the end (within the last 45 minutes) there were times that I went all-in 3-4 times in a row. The only time I got in trouble is when I 3xbb raised with A-K. I wanted to actually play a pot and not steal. I missed the flop and hung in there to catch my K on the turn only to push and realize my opponent caught a K on the turn too....only he caught his J on the flop. I went from 45K down to 10K in that one hand.
I went back to picking my spots to push...stole a bit more, caught a couple hands and knocked out 2 very small stacks that had to push and clawed back up to 30K. I got A-T on the button, UTG had limped for 3K...folds to me - I push...SB and BB fold, UTG thinks long and hard and calls me.....K-J again he got his King and I am out in 10th place.

Long way to say that I do not think it is wrong to raise or push 2,3 even 4 times in a row. Don't let them breath....make them fear you, I think the only thing I would have done differently in your case was not to show some of the hands you were stealing with. I think you were mixing 2 different strategies....stealing with junk and showing to induce action is good early in a tourney when the blinds are low and you want action. But late in a tourney all you want is the blinds - you really don't want people to play with you....600/1200, 1000/2000 blinds is a nice profit if you take them 2 times per orbit. You showed a couple steals there near the end, which got people thinking; "hey he may really have junk again- I might as well call him and take a shot" If they have no idea what you are pushing with, it will be very hard for them to call even with a pretty good hand. I don't know about you - but if someone (close to even stack/not small stack) goes AI in front of me, I am not putting my whole tourney life on the line by calling with K-J....there are better spots, and I want to be doing the pushing not calling.
