Default New to poker... need some advice here.

First, let me say this is an awesome website, and poker is an awesome game.

This guy has been taking people's money all night, but a few hands ago I won a few bucks off him with pocket 9s so I'm feeling he's a little vengeful now.

I was trying to do the things I've been reading here. I bet big on the flop when I got high pair, trying to prevent him from chasing the flush and turn/river.

    Wastin' away again in margaritaville....
I would have folded that J6 to the raise, hell I wouldn't even limp in late position with it in a ring game...

Why did you check the river? He gave you no indication that he had you beat until you showed weakness and he picked up on it. Neitherthe straight draw nor the flush draw completed. If you believe that you have the best hand you have to keep betting it. If you were worried about being outkicked, stop playing suited cards like that and wait till you pick up a higher quality hand. Its hard to know where you are when you get called down with top pair bad kicker. Now if you had AJ , would you have checked that river?

Sometimes as a result of being aggressive you get called down by a better hand. Better that than them raising you on the river. As you progress as a player, you will find that your reads will be correct more often and you will win bigger pots by continuing your aggression in the appropriate place. For now, stick to the high quality hands so your decisions will be easier.

    hope this helps,

Yeah, I suppose I wasn't sure I had the best hand ever and on the river I really just wanted to get to the card showdown so I checked hoping he would let me see his cards for free. He bluffed the hell out of me. Thanks for the advice.

I think Pot sized bets are for TPTK or at least TPGK. With TPTK, there are just two pair, trips, straight etc. that you have to worry about, rather uncommon hands. With TPWK there is a whole bunch of possible better pairs that you have to be afraid of, which makes it much more difficult to be aggressive.
