Default Recent Porn and Spam Attack

Hey guys, I have to apologize for the recent porn attack we were subjected to by the disgruntled minor.

For those of you who don't know what happened, here's a brief synopsis of the occurrence.

This kid posted in a thread about how he and his brother collude at online poker. Obviously, the stand up crowd here at FTR would have none of that bullshit. The kid started to feel the heat and feebly attempted to defend himself. Well, understanding that he would soon be banned from this forum, decided to be an asshat and go out in a blaze of glory. He then proceeded to spam the forums with pornographic material.

I was able to ban his login and IP address, but only after much of the damage was done. I'm in the process of cleaning it up now.

Anyway, we have his name, address, phone number, IP address, and personal website (my gratitude goes to a certain resourceful and very large primate). This isn't quite over yet.

But I deeply apologize for the disruption and alarm this may have caused some of you. I know that pulling up some of these threads in a work or public environment and seeing such material is totally unacceptable. We will put together a plan to react quicker the next time around.

I want FTR to be a fun and safe place to visit, I'll do whatever I can to keep it that way. Later.

Hmm... but what will Xianti do?

Maybe there's something we could do, it seems we need some help in the forums...or would you rather have a banana?

Sorry, guys. I'm usually on top of these things almost immediately.

I've been buried at work lately and now sit in a silly cube-farm setting, so time and privacy at work have not been available to me.

    My apologies.

I think sending his ip address/email address to every poker venue on the internet is the start of a little revenge.

    Eric, Xianti, an Tyson,

Just let rilla do your work for you, he just sits around all day staring at ftr anyways. He would have had this cleaned up before you even knew about it.

You guys just need to find some other stand up guys to help you, maybe fnord as well.

Agreed, it's possible to have Global Moderators on these forums isn't it?

One of those would be great for the time, so that any posts can be deleted almost immediately by the hairy FTR addict.

There is a fairly consistant group of spammers on here, i'm sure they would probably be a good assest to moderate this forum as it continues to grow (by leaps and bounds no less). That would probably be the best way to handle issues like this in the future. Restricting what people can link and post is the other way, but then you put a lot of constraints on the members. Don't like that if 1 does wrong they all suffer mentality personally.

I agree with global moderating. There have been times I've been in other sections, and was unable to get rid of some garbage I was reading there. I know I wouldn't mind if one of the other moderators had the authority to oversee my section and I theirs.

Just an idea. Good one Dwarfy.

I agree that we need to do something. Maybe we can change some of the moderators to super moderators with ban control.

Well most of your mods - i would say all of your mods - would only do what you guys wished. If you gave us global control with ban control too because you couldnt seperate and just said don't ban leave that to us I'm sure none of us would ban people. I just thought that might be the reason you havent done it yet because you don't want to take the chance of a renegade mod just totally messin up the forums. I and Fnord are 2 senior citizen members so we should get it if anyone. Rilla does live here though so if you trust that hairy son of a sasquatch he should get it too.

He's a tricky little beast, boondock. I really think Rilla should be given some kind of super mod powers though. He's always on and would be able to catch a lot of stuff before it gets out of hand.

Having a broader group of admins is not all that bad. I frequent a programming (javaranch.com) forum where a number of folks who frequent the site regularly and persistently, have admin ability. The spam and other necessarily unwanted verbiage is kept at a bare (and almost non-existent) minimum.

These positions are based on number of posts and content of past posts and general agreement by participants (plus the owner). It works very well.
