In the end, it does come out that it was a smart move on your part. My only concern would've been if he had been holding, say, Ah6h. This hand would've fallen into your read as well, but would've eliminated your outs for the flush. That would've only left with you with 3 J's, 3 Q's, and 3 10's as outs, or 9/45 = 20% chance of winning the hand. Since you were confident he was holding Axs (w the x paired on the board), I'd see your drawing odds as
(1/3)*(9/45) + (2/3) *((4+3+3+8)/45) = .333 chance of winning the hand, roughly (keep in mind, you could have hit the Ah on the turn, only to have him hit one of his 4 outs on the river for a full house)
In all, with that read on him, I would leery of calling.
Or I could be totally wrong.
