Default Over-aggressive, Bad luck, or Stupid?

Pretty early in a MTT Blinds 25/50

    ME: T2800
    UTG+1: T2750

    Dealt 88 in the SB
    UTG+1 limps
    Folded around
    I raise to 150
    BB calls
    UTG+1 calls

Flop 679 two to a suit

    I raise 400
    BB folds
    UTG+1 raises 400

I had just got to the table and I hadn't seen UTG+1 play many hands, no-reraise after his limp was raised said no high pair so I put him on a med strength hand, something like TJ, a low pair or Axs. Min-raise seemed like a feeler bet where he may have hit his kicker or was testing me. I had second pair, a backdoor flush draw and an OESD so I push.

He flips over 8To and I get no love from the dealer...

    Comments....
Bad luck, stupid play, or overaggressive? All of the above?

Your taking a huge risk early, I doubt it was worth it.
I actually would have put him on A9s or 1010.... often players limp these to aim for the set. Of course he could have actually hit a set and be pushing off the straight draw, or have already made the straight.

Either way, I think you stand to be well behind, with a hopeful maximum of 10 outs (for trips assuming he doesnt hit the straight, and the OESD), and an average probably outs of about 6?

Your hardly pot committed, I think it is a better idea to fold.

(Note: this is assuming that he is pot-committed enough to guarantee he will call your reraise push, as I didnt check the numbers on the semi-bluff)

I agree with you, it was not good to risk all my chips that early. I decided that if I was behind, it wasn't by much so it was worth the push on the chance he might fold a higher pair... I had thought that it was very unlikely he could have flopped the straight. Oh well, bust and learn. I should have bet a little less on the flop and dropped it to the raise. It was not a smart play.

Moral: never underestimate the possibility of unlikely holding early in the tourney

Up to the push I was right there with you....that min raise feels like a flopped set to me....trying to get you to do what you did. I probably just call and take a look at the turn and check fold at this point in the tourney.

Side note: WTF was he doing calling a 3XBB raise with 8-To from UTG+1 anyway??? I hope you put a few notes on him, he will pay you off in the future. Particularly since he got that bit of positive reinforcement he will do it again. I am always surprised how many people I run across on a daily basis that I have notes on....very handy

Couldn't have said it better myself. That's why I'm quoting you. See.

It's hard for me to imagine him putting out that minraise with anything less than an overpair. Thought maybe he'd flip over TT. But T8?? lol.

Which is why I had no idea I was drawing so dead, the vast majority of (non-moron) UTG+1 limping hands I was ahead of or had ~40% chance to draw out on with 10 outs. I need to be more wary of raises before the first break, I think I slipped into mid tourney mode a bit early there.

"Semi-Bluff" Yes the guy was an idiot for playing 8-10, but I think you made a good play on the hand. Just be careful when people push back, going over the top can be risky, but in this place, I thought it was a decent move. It depends on the player too, is he going to call with top pair, with anykicker? How about a draw? I doubt people are going to just limp UTG+1 with any pair > 10, and he possibly could have flopped a set. In this situation you would have to put a pretty good read on the player, especially since people might be going for a resteal with a flop like this, etc. All-in-all I think you made a good play.
