Avatars Off

I know there was a poll recently about work-safe avatars, but I don't know if it was ever resolved. As a compromise, could we get an option to turn avatar viewing off? I'm pretty sure there's a PHPBB mod for this.

I've installed this one previously that allows members to select if they see avatars and/or signatures via options in their profile.

Not only do pages load faster without the images but I can guarantee that if I work 98% of the day, my boss would walk past the 2% I decide to do something leisurely.

Indeed this was discussed before and we did decide that giving all users the option of turning avatars would be best.

Unfortunately, I'm not much of a programmer, and Eric (our programmer) hasn't had a lot of time to make the code changes required to implement the mod. I would do it myself, but I can't make heads or tails out of the instructions, and I'm afraid I might make the forums explode. (AvatarKava knows how timid I am about tinkering with code... )


Is there some sort of mod installer that automatically makes all the changes to the phpBB code?

I read through it. 22 percent of the people in the phpbb thread gave it a poor rating so I'm not sure we want to rush into putting this on our board. There was a link to a similar mod here:

Not sure which thread to post in now

Just installed the phpbbhacks mod - and it installed and works fine and dandy...taking just a few more minutes than the other mod to install.
Part of the mod mentions $popuppm which for some versions of phpbb should read $popup_pm - so it says it can't find the line when you search for it - other than that - 'tis fine.

There probably won't be any problems down the line, but phpbb tend not to support hacks that aren't official phpbb mods. Thus, if something did go wrong (with the forum in general, not just this mod) and you said you have this hack installed, they may not bother to provide assistance.

In other news v 2.0.11 is out and may be good to upgrade to for any future mods.

We're on an older version of phpbb so I'd prefer to do our upgrade first and then see about adding mods.

Does anyone know if these are the only 2 mods to choose from? If possible I'd like to use one that doesn't make us modify 10 different files.

Xianti, Eric, and I discussed this further today, we will put an action plan that will probably first involve an upgrade, and then application of this mod. We'll keep everyone posted with our schedule. We understand the need for a work-safe environment. We also understand the need for boobs.

when i'm desperate i just turn on images for my browser....or you can use mozilla and IE at the same time, and use one for the forums with images off

I've finally given in and turned off all images. Makes it very difficult to navagate and even so some images still get through. But It's better than giving up FTR. (I tryed for about 2 weeks)

I'm looking for a simpler one. After reading in the phpBB forums, there have been some problems with the code in the two versions listed above and I don't even know if they'll work with 2.0.11.
