Default Not getting the cards or bad playing?

Here's a hand history of a $5+.50 2 table SnG. For the most part I wasn't getting any decent cards to work with, but I need advice on how to play when the cards aren't coming your way and the blinds are going up. (I will post only the hand histories of the hands I saw the flop with.)

    Wastin' away again in margaritaville....
When you aren't getting cards and the blinds get big you have to try to grow your stack or at least keep it from blinding away by stealing the blinds at least every orbit. In a SnG once the blinds hit 50/100 if I have not doubled up and am sitting on the buyin, I start stealing. If you have doubled up you can wait longer...

For me it depends. If there's alot of action at the table, I'll hunker down. (but i'm tight anyway)

Sorry but I've only taken a cursory look at the list you posted and I just looked at your play, so I don't know how much action there was. In your last hand you weren't in trouble by any means. It seemed like you lost some patience there at the end and got very active, but I could be wrong. Let's see you played hands:
56 on button with A4 you raise and then call a reraise and lose basically to pocket 55. (should have folded to a reraise)
57 1 off button AK caller in front AI raise and win uncontested
60 - from SB AJ, raise AI and take blinds
62 - BB, kj, caller in front (same guy) you raise AI and lose to A high (he paired up, but you were behind preflop)

Thats 4 out of 7 hands. Pretty active. The rest of it dodn't look like you were getting an unusual # of bad cards.

In your situation I would have checked the KJ, but the raise wasn't totally off the chart since he had called and folded to a raise b4. BUT, since you were so active recently with alot of AI's then he had to call. No one gets that many great cards that often. That run of good cards set up the A high call. Which is why you should have checked it and made a hand b4 you went AI.

Your chip stack was good for 5 rounds of bb and sb. You had 5 players at the table. I assume top 3 paid. 1 other player had abot 1500 and 2 had about 2000. There was only 1 big stack at 7000+. That's good in that situation for slowing down. Everyone is looking to see what the big stack will do, and he may vacuum up a player or two for you.

You're weren't in desperate straights, AI is not the only tool in the toolbox. Check that BB and let the flop help you, or at least show you if an A came or not.

I've been alot worse off and come in 2nd and even 1st by using all the tools, not just AI. When I'm short sometimes I'ld rather gamble by CALLING with AK and hopefully getting some other callers and a little help. You won a little with your good cards and lost big with medeocre cards. That's why you mix it up. You're gambling either way.

When I'm short and the blinds are high, I want to see a flop and want others to as well as often as not. Especially if they've showed any inclination toward trying to steal post flop. If I think I'm beat I fold. If I catch that A or K with AK in the hole, then I'll string em along as long as there's no scary draws on the board and I think they're drawing to it.

Anyway, I think you felt pressure that wasn't there yet, you could have played a little more sophisticated with the AK, the Ax call of a reraise was a mistake, and you didn't need to go ai with KJ from the BB with just a call in front.

I think if one of the other stacks had taken a hit of any kind (one contested hand they lose would cripple them) then they might have tilted out for you, and the big stack may have cracked someone else. I've seen it happen too often to discount, which is why I'm patient for as long as possible. And then, I remind myself to be patient some more. And then, I'll let people into the hand preflop with quality, like AK, AA, KK, and maybe QQ and hope they bet into me post flop.

That's my feedback. You didn't play poorly. But you asked for advice and that's mine. (I play shortstacked alot because I play 2 and 3 table SnG's and I'm tigher than a baby turtle's ass - to quote others on the site.

Just a reminder - first get ITM, then worry about the chip stack. I don't mind someone with a huge stack at the table. He can have everyone's chips but mine. When we get Heads Up then I'll take them from him. In the 20 player I just played. I was fighting as the relative short stack from 7 players left (top 5 pays). I had essentially the same type cards you were getting. A couple other people made mistakes, or got too tight against blind steals against them, and I'm in 5th. I win one hand that helps me get to about 2000 chips with a couple 4000+ stacks at the table and someone loses a simple hand, now they're crippled. They go AI and get beat by a drawing big stack. Long story short, I get into 2nd play with about 4000 chips to the 12K chip leader and take 1st place by seeing alot of flops (I'll call a min raise heads up with any 2 low cards) and I bluff and slowplay him into submission. By the time he had 5000 and I had 11,000, it was over. I had slowplay check/raised him so many times and raised his limp-ins, or bet the flop to make him fold that he didn't know whether to shit or go blind. He folded under any pressure at all, and if he showed any resistance I let him have the pot and pressured him the next hand.

The point is, I had as few as 900 chips with 7 players and the same blinds you faced and came back to take 1st. Why? Because I don't have to do EVERYTHING to get ITM, I let other players do some of the work for me. And I mix up my game as much as I can - within reason.

Actually, I thought hand 56 was a WTF call. Only 75 chips to see a flop for 1000. Third guy even checked it down for you.

I thought hand 33 could have been played differently. You have an OESD, a nut flush redraw, and 2 overcards to the flop. He min raised two limpers, and threw out a standard continuation bet.

True, your outs are not totally clean, since he could have AK/AQ, or a flush draw, but you do outstack him by 500 chips, so if you reraise all in and lose, you are still in the tournament.

Depends on your read, but this guy was in most of the hands you listed previously... so he's got to be pretty loose.

Alright, well my analysis basically follows along the lines of what Zen and Aok said. I expand a bit more on specific hands, but I'm basically in agreement. There's no way I would have folded hand 56 for 75 extra with a chance of eliminating someone. The raise you made was questionable to me though.

    My thoughts:
What happened on the hands you were in the blinds with (the Jd9d and 3c4c)? I'd have limped both of those (though obviously if you're blind you're not limping).

    Good fold on the 44.

Good play on the T2. Half the time I'd bet there even without the T, just to pick up a pot.

33 looks good - you can't see into the future and someone having any part of that flop kills you. I might have called the min-raise on the flop, but likely would have folded the turn. Depends slightly on my read on the opponents. Having seen this hand, if the Cooke played the same way later, I might have called or even reraised.

Assuming an unraised pot, I'd complete the SB with Ac4c. Not sure if doing so is good play or not, but it's how I'd do it.

I like the aggression w/ KJ in late position. G00t.

AJ - maybe raise to limit the field here? I know you're in early position, but had you done so, it would have been likely that you'd have been ahead on the flop, setting you up for a perfect semi-bluff with 15+ outs to the best hand. I might have even called the flop bet (depending on my read), since you have so many outs. Would depend on what a pot-sized bet from Cooke meant - esp when he's leading the betting.

    QJ - good.

I probably would have played As9s. Again, just me. I may overplay my suited Aces.

AT, 44, KJ look good, although I'm still suspicious about Cooke.

A4o - overplayed, I think. I know you were on the button, but I'd probably see the flop for cheap here and use the button to manipulate things from there.

AK & AJs - don't overbet because you have a big hand. Bet your standard and then if you feel it's worth it, push the flop. Your stack would have liked at least one caller here, I think.

KJ - were you still playing desperate? I definitely don't push here. You've done it so much that people are more likely to call and you have less of a hand than you've had the either of the previous times. You're on your way to a healthy stack again, and the money is approaching. Risky pushes can make the difference between making nothing and taking home just a little $$.

Hey thanks for the replies. Just to clarify things, this was a 2 table SnG and the tables didn't combine yet, so I wasn't really close to being ITM. I went out in 10th place.

On hand 56 where I had A4o, I realize it was a questionable blind steal, and probably should've waited for a better opportunity. And when he went AI for 75 more, I hated to call because I felt I was dominated, but I had no choice since the pot was so big already.

On hand 33 when I had AJ, I was REALLY stupid. I didn't realize what the flop was until I folded. I thought it was 78T, where I had just overs. Really dumb mistake. If I could go back I think I definitely would've pushed there.

On the next two when I had AK and AJ, I don't understand your reasoning about coming in for a raise, because I only had just over 3xBB at that point, so basically I'd be pot committed anyway, regardless of the flop, and I dont want to give that limper with KT or something a chance to hit his top pair for cheap, in which case he'd put me AI and I'd be forced to call, whereas a preflop AI would eliminate this kind of stuff from happening. After all, it is only ace high on an unimproved flop, right?

And I totally agree about the KJ push. It was stupid of me, but I guess I was getting frustrated and just wanted to double up as soon as possible. I just figured that the only way for me to make it ITM was to double up sooner or later. And aok, do you think you could post some of those SnG's where you were severely short stacked and came back to win? I'd really like to see em. Thanks.
