Default could I have taken this hand?

party $5+$1 MTT. about 1800 or so. Had finally made a decent showing in an MTT by winning a couple of coin flips. and a couple tough calls on my reads. I've got a top 1/3 stack with about 55 or so left, then this happens. It didn't cripple me by any means, but i never did recover from it, caught a run of bad cards after this hand and when i tried to make moves they were sniffed out. I ended up pushing 99 against a board with one over (of course he had the jack in his hand) to the same guy i lost this hand to and busted out at 42.

My read on garychan is that he's not a bully, but fairly agressive. Sees a lot of flops. Isn't afraid to fold if he thinks he's beat, but will push into just about every unraised pot that he's in. Overall a pretty solid player.

I'm curious to hear some opinions on this. Would I have been able to push him off of his set if I bet the turn harder? Is this an AI situation? Should i have not even called his flop bet? Raised preflop?

Looking back on it, the first thing that I see i should have done was raise this preflop. Odds are that I pickup the blinds and move on, and he never calls 4500 to go with his .

I just called his flop bet because i didn't want to show too much... i was hoping to see the turn cheap, hit my flush, and have him put me on a set of tens or two pair.

I just messed this hand all up... 1/4 or his stack obviously wasn't enought to move him off of his set (he took a loooong time to make this call though). Although, I don't know that i would have made the same call in his position... anyway a bet for half his stack or more probably was required.

A 42nd finish isn't anything to brag about, i know, but compared to my other MTT experiences, this has been the best so far. Many thanks to rilla, rada, rippy, soupie and everyone else for their posts. They have helped me tremendously.

I think if your read is that GaryChan is a tight player, you need to raise this pre-flop and take him out of the equation. You are in optimal position to do this with everyone folding in front of you.

Sure, KJs isn't a massive hand, but if you PFR, then you portray strength and take the middle hands out. This to me is a hand I would rather steal the blinds with than get called/raised and play from the flop.

Its a little unfortunate though, because you were about a 4:1 fave when your flush hit.

Others may disagree, but i think this would have been the way to go here.

Raise preflop, reraise the flop, reraise the turn...I like to put pressure on other players...tough beat on the River

late position with a fairly decent hand with no limpers in front of you is an easy raise. when the blinds are big you want to limit the number of times you limp into an unraised pot. even just stealing blinds with a hand like this is good because it continues to build your stack. i'd say that was a good sized bet on the turn however, just unlucky that he hit the river
