HU hand in a MTT home tourney

Heads up Hand at a live home MTT tourney:

Villian seems tight but has pushed all-in PF 2 times, got 2 callers and tripled up and was the underdog both times. He will also drop a hand if pushed hard enough, I have ran him off several hands already on scary flops.

Chip stacks (approx):

Villian: T20k
Hero: T40k
Blinds: 4k/8k

Hero is BB and Dealt: Ad 7s

Villian is SB and Completes.

Hero raises the min, 8k.

Villian pushes all-in.

Hero ????

If I'm reading this correctly:

he puts in 8k, leaving him with 12k. You raise 8k to 16k, making the pot 24k at this point. He pushes all-in for 12k (a raise of 4k over your bet).

Why raise the min if it's so close to putting him all-in anyway? Might as well just force him to play for all his chips.

So the pot is 36k and it's 4k for you to call? No brainer call from me.

sounds to me like you guys let the blinds get a little too big... that really uts you in a tight spot because you cant lay that down cause you are basically dick-deep into that pot. but again, A-7o is a hand that makes me cringe thinking about calling an AI with preflop. You have to call, but it sucks that you have to

Really? This is an honest question, do you guys really hate A7 heads-up? any A5 and up is a pretty good hand. Almost certainly a coinflip or better. Just wondering.

I agree. I said that before we started, but if fell on deaf ears.

His just completing was a weak move I thought. It was about 40% of his chips at that point. With A good hand he almost has to push at this point. It told me he was trying to see a flop as cheap as possible.

Anyways, I called. he flipped over K5s and I hit an ace on the turn to win the tourney (he was unimproved).

Ax is usually pretty strong HU. Although calling an all-in with it is probably something you don't want to do too often.

You should have raised all-in to begin with. Your ace high figures to be the favorite over his hand, and moving in allows you to win the pot right there or by having the best hand on the river if he calls.

By giving him room to come over the top, suddenly you're faced with a decision as to where you stand (he could be doing this with a wide range of hands), and now you can only win by having the best hand on the river.

for sure. you got to be way more selective about calling AI than raising AI. Heads up especially. Its all about control. You, as the big stack, need to be pushing him out of as many hands as possible. You should never, check, or call heads up. Raise or Fold. Either you are in (raise) or out (fold). Its like saxton said, you can win if he folds, and you can win if you showdown the best hand. Always give yourself that extra "out" of him folding.

Also, your ace high is only a slight favorite over a random hand, so you'd prefer to win the pot without a showdown, rather than letting the hand go to the river. Now that he's been allowed the opportunity move in, you're forced to gamble with a hand which is probably only slightly better than his.

Yes, You are all in with almost ANY TWO CARDS. Blinds should only get this high after extended period of play. If you have been going heads up for 30mins then I would expect blinds pretty high.
