You have to look at these hands in context. It's really going to help. Human nature, standard play, poker convention. What does he have, what do you have? Just blind, you don't know your cards or his. What would someone in your position raise with, what would someone in his position call with?
What is someone going to call a big raise with? AK, you would reraise with a pocket pair. From his prespective what's someone going to make a big raise with?, big pocket pair AK, AQ. (maybe medium pocket pair or just a steal based on position) but you get the point.
So you can pretty much know what's probably out there. If he had JJ, TT, QQ, KK, AA, he would have reraised you preflop, probably. But he didn't. So you have to figure AK - at least I would.
The two cards I don't want to see are A or K. So, boom, an A comes out. OK, maybe HE thinks I have AK, so I throw out a bet. When he calls I have to put him on an A. At that point I'm done with this hand. Here's an insight - MOST of the time people have the obvious hand. Yea, you can get bluffed out from time to time. He had some concern about the Q kicker, I think. I don't think you could have taken it with another bet, however, unless you went All In and that would have been a pure bluff with only a partial chance of success. Plus you have to put him on AK!!! The fact that he had AQ is insignificant.
