I would have put him on QJ or something similar after the turn.

But after the river I am going to guess he had 8-8

4-4, 3-4 and Q-Q are just as surprising, and I think that Q-Q and 8-8 can probably be ruled out. Q-Q should've raised before the flop, 8-8 and Q-Q should've bet on the flop, and 8-8 shouldn't bet the turn, or call a check-raise on the turn.

The only answers that might make some kind of sense are 3-4 suited and 4-4, if we're assuming that you did lose, and that your opponents hand was played somewhat reasonably (if it wasn't, there's virtually no way to answer your puzzle).

He could also be one of those fish who slowplays AA or KK thinking either it cant be beat, or mad from the last time they lost with it.
