Default SnG performance falling after reading posts here

I have read all the sticky posts here and love the advice and tactics being tought in them - especially the ones by Ripptyde. The weird thing is that my RING game results are way better now, but my tourney results I think have gone down, particularly in the SnG's. I was consistently finishing in the money in $5 SnG's, and was winning in about 1 for every 4 I was playing. Now I am busting out before the money in all of them. I moved down to $2 while I was working out this new style for me, and still busting out of those.

Now I know that this is a result of my play and application of the tactics and strategies. I am not questioning the advice in these posts.

So my question is, what are the common errors that a new poker player makes when trying these tactics out - especially in SnG's? I'm thinking my problem may be (but I'm not sure) that I don't know when to abandon a hand that I have put a few bets out there on.

Any general advice will help, and I will be paying more attention to what is going on so maybe I can ask more specific questions in the future. Love this forum!

You really need a decent reading skill to have success with the loose-aggressive style. It can be learned but it might end up being pretty expensive to do so. I think a reason why your ring game is going better is that players generally play tighter in ring, so aggressive play will be folded to more often.

I assume that what you've learned here was to tighten up your starting hand requirements and then, when you do enter a pot, you play it very aggressively and mow down the others in the pot.

Need more information to help you out, but my problem was that I started winning more SnGs using these tactics and then thought I could loosen up. I quickly gained a lot of confidence. Problem is confidence doesn't win many pots when you're dominated. I had/have to learn how to lay 'em down when I'm beat.
I'll be a rootin' tootin' shootin' damn fool, protectin' my chips.

I'm not sure how you play now, or how you used to, but I think you should go back to your old style if it was working for you. Everyone has their own personal style no matter what books they read or what they see online. If something is continually making a profit than stick with it, but try to fix up a few patches you see in your game.

Playing LAG in low stakes games can often be a disaster, its a necessity at later levels in an SNG but it needs to be controlled aggression and some idiots at those stakes you can't push out of a pot. Your read of bottom pair might be 100% accurate and he still might call you.

    Thanks for the responses.

Last night I finished 3rd in a $5 MTT. I am pretty excited about that, because it bumped my bankroll up 25%.

I think my problem was playing too aggressive early in the tourneys and also not paying enough attention to my position. I took and index card and wrote POSITION on it and stuck it under my monitor.

So by picking my spots early and then later playing more aggressive in folded pots and in position, I managed to put together one of my best performances.

I still have A LOT to learn.

Now if I can get these SnG's going again........

You're still finding yourself. Your walking in new shoes, and then complaining they hurt your feet. It will take a while to break into your comfort zone. Probably months. Be patient. Let your beats teach you. Taking two steps back will be worth it. Your skills will increase exponentially the more you mix it up and learn new ways of doing things.

Don't be afraid to experiment just because you'll get your ass kicked everytime you try something new. Laugh it off and explore any tactic you can find. Be TAGG, be LAGG, be tight passive against LAGG's. Eventually you'll play a hand wrong for the right reasons and take someone's stack because you confused them.

Ever raise 76 offsuit after playing TAGG for a while? Watch the beauty of it when a rag flop hits two pair for you. All sorts of people will be coming over the top of you like fireworks, and you'll shit your pants laughing so hard.
It's not what's inside that counts. Have you seen what's inside?
Internal organs. And they're getting uglier by the minute.
