Playing against the maniac shortterm

How do you play against the maniac to win in the short-run, is it possible without getting in there and gamble? The guy I played recently played over 50% of the pots, raised very often and called other peoples raises equally often. It was a hometourney scheduled to run for maybe 2 hours.

I'm not comfortable calling even small raises if I don't have more than a high card.

I think the most important thing is getting position on them, if you can sit on the immediate left of a maniac you have a big advantage. You have to show the maniac that you are willing to play back at them, if you can isolate and get a really good flop try slowplaying it if you have position (its very risky i know) or try a check raise if you dont have position. After that he might think twice about betting every flop against you.
