Default I know I played this wrong, but...

    Do I check the flop?
I did a gay underbet and followed it up with a big turn bet that cost me.

I guess the general policy is check to an overpair?

check turn, check river. maybe call a weak bet and pick off a bluff, but not too much.

when he called your bets, what range of hands did you put him on?
it was good to bet out on the flop even with the king out there. but, i think you're right that it wasn't enough.
i agree with checking on the river, but betting on that 5 wasn't such a bad idea. you would have scared him off if he didn't have anything, but when he called you knew he had some hand... so, yeah, checking the river was a good idea. but, checking the turn could save you chips. i wonder if he put you on a king with a better kicker or if he was just scared of those 5's and that's why he was only calling then checking and not re-raising...
seems like you could have bluffed him out. (hindsight is 20/20 )

    the flop bet was fine.
check/call a small bet on the turn
check/call a small bet on the river if needed.

dont waste too many chips trying to show the hand down. Anyone who calls your flop bet probably has you beat. You were unlucky the king flopped.

No way Jose. The fact that he didn't bet doesn't mean that he wouldn't have called an all-in. He wouldv'e and if he had lost woulda blamed bad luck on his beat.

This early in the tourney the turn bet was out of line - if he had the 78 and didn't hit fine, you get to see what he had and pick up the pot. If he has the K (or even the offchance of the 5 there) he's not folding. Suck up the small loss and get it back in the next hand you play.

    What overpair?

I agree with above, bet the flop to rep the K, after you get called you're done unless he lets you get to showdown very cheap - I think you need at least 4-1 to call on 4th and 5th.

'that's why he was only calling then checking and not re-raising... '

KQ cannot raise here, no one is calling a raise unless they beat KQ. This is the answer to the question - "Why shouldn't I play KQ more often?"
