I check fold on the flop.

PUt him on a range of hands that would raise preflop.
AK, AA, KK, QQ, Maybe JJ Maybe TT Maybe AQ.

AK AQ AA KK QQ haveu beat

JJ are unlikely cuz you have 2 of them already
TT he might not raise with, but if he did, youd be beat anyways.

Is there any way your ahead on the flop?
When you bet the flop what are you trying to represent to him? An AK that didnt push over a 3xBB raise preflop? An AQ that called a preflop raise?

In the face of a solid bet like that I would have called but would
    have check/folded if a K or A showed.

I think you either need to re raise AI pre flop or play for the overpair/set. Above is correct, what hand do you possibly have beat with that flop? If the guy raised with KQ or 99 from EP and then is willing to bet on that flop, tip your hat and move on.

I didn't think I was ahead on the flop, but i though I might be able to push him off by representing the ace. I almost did too, it took him 50 seconds to call. I should've pushed AI on the turn.

I do agree with you guy's however that there's no way I am ahead on the flop. I was playing for set and missed but then thought I'd take a stab. If I had made a bigger bet I would've pushed him off, but that's playing with fire. No way to tell he didn't have AK or somthin.

Thanks for the tips... check / foldin that next time.
