ITM Strategy help for SNG's

Hello,

I have been making it ITM alot more recently while playing 5+1 SNG's on Party. Unfortunately i have been getting my majority of places being 3rd and 2nd with very few 1st places. I have not purposely been trying to play differently when i make it ITM, perhaps i am just giving up because mentally i know i have made it ITM. Has anyone else come across this situation?

Here is the hand history from one game just after 3rd place left the table. I had just read a Rypptyde Strategy and was trying to be as agressive as possible. The other player was pretty tight and would only really raise with strong hands. Any suggestions on how i can improve my late game would be appreciated. I would like to improve in this area before i move up to 10+1

Hand: 2160243375 - You said yourself that your opponent was tight and would only really bet when he had a hand, so why are you coming over the top with nothing in this hand when he bets out? You doubled him up when all he should have won was the blinds.


Generally, good aggression although I saw noticed you way over bet the pot on several occassions. Especially with an opponent like this you don't want to get in a habit of doing that. Why go AI on a bluff when betting 1/3 of your stack will accomplish the same thing? If he has nothing he is about as likely to fold to a bet of 1,000 as he is to you shoving all your chips in. If he has something though you just committed everything and if he calls you're likely an underdog.

Last Hand: I don't like calling the AI with J3s. I know you are getting short stacked, but if you fold you still have ~1,300 which isn't horrible. It's fine to raise AI with a hand like this short-stacked, but I wouldn't call an AI which you basically did, especially given that your opponent hasn't raised without showing down a pretty good hand. If it's me, I fold here and push AI next hand regardless of cards.

Aggression is good, but over-aggression can hurt you. You don't have to win every pot or come over the top of every bet to be aggressive. If you're over-aggressive all the time you're opponent is less likely to respect your raises so be aware of that. A decent opponent will just let you do the raising for him by check-raising you so be aware of that as well.

I have not purposely been trying to play differently when i make it ITM, perhaps i am just giving up because mentally i know i have made it ITM

You may very well have answered your own question. I play SnG alot and found myself doing the same. Made the money dont worry about 1st! When I finally decided to win instead of just ITM my win rate increased dramatically. To defeat a very tight opponent can take alot of time and generally you have to trap them. (at least thats my experience) When you are no longer satisfied with 2nd, THEN you will find more marks in the win column.
