Lots of sites have freeroll tourneys...The MTT's on pokerstars arent too bad as long as you play real tight early. But the best thing is to just bite the bullet and deposit some money. You can play micro rings or some small buyin sngs to learn. The best thing to do is deposit and play...free play is only good to get you used to the site's interface.
Superb play sir...I always call 20% of my stack off with a gutshot draw. Excuse me while I race for my wallet.

on absolute poker they have a 50$ freeroll every 30 minutes.
It can get a bit hectic the first few hands with the novice players going all-in with Ax. But you can learn alot here, if you get a bad beat you just sign up for the next one.
    Really worthwhile to play

VC Poker is good for Micro MTT's, they do ones with buy ins as low as a dollar and the fee is only 10%. They do super low buy in SNG's too.

Thanks for the link poskid. I always wanted to find a cheap (preferably free) place to play MTT's until I'm more comfortable to throw in the big buyin to play one.

I'll do the freeroll's at Pokerstars on occassion, but they aren't all day round and I can't take the long block of time to play them at their times alot.

This sort-of addresses the question I was going to ask. My question was “Does what you win in play money indicate anything about your skill as a player?”

I started this hobby 5 days ago when a friend setup a friendly cash game for this coming weekend. Since then I have spent up to 6 hrs a day studying and 2-4 hrs a night playing. Last night I was rolling well and was up 475$ in the hr that I played. The thing is, does it matter at all? The ring is filled with players like me on my first day. Pop in with $25 in play money. Loose it all in 30 mins, then get another $25 hehe.

I am starting to think maybe I could actually do ok at real money. A week ago, nobody could have convinced me that I would ever play real money poker on a regular basis. I like the idea of winning real money at these tournaments to bankroll my play. Thanks for the post.

    BTW, whats an MTT?

An MTT is a Multi Table Tournment.

And just to let you know, the only thing play tables are good for is learning the interface so it a problem the first to you play for real money. You best bet is to deposit money at a site that gives you a bit of a bonus and lets you play small stakes. Their is an on-line room forum full of info on how to chose one of these.

I think the play money tournaments are a better way to learn than the regular play money tables. I have found the average player in the tournaments are much better than the players at the regular play money tables. I also think the experience is valuable. One can learn things like the proper fold/flop ratio and learning how to label players. As yet, I haven’t been able to label players at all but I can see that with experience it will come. The last tournament I played I was able to label one player easily. He rarely folded and didn’t know when not to play a pot out. It’s coming along and the play money tables give you a risk free way to learn these things.

On Empire, a play money holdem tournament starts every minute or so.

I actually won my first play money tournament over the weekend. I had an easier time of it because most of the players wouldn’t bluff and seemed to know what they were doing more than the other tourneys I had played. Of course, they were also more predictable because of it. Is that possible? I play better against better players? Hehe. <shrug>

One disadvantage of the play money games is that Empire will not mail you hand histories. They will show you them in an interface but only one hand at a time. So there is no easy way to use PokerTracker. To figure out my fold/flop ratio I was trying to keep hash marks of all the hands I played and the number of flops I saw. It was real hard to keep it accurate when concentrating on the game and it completely fell apart once I got head up. Oh well, that one I won so its all good.

This is quickly becoming one of my pet peeves.

You play better against a different kind of equally bad player.

True enough. Thanks for slaming me down though. hehe
Actually, they were pretty predictable (as I think I am) so that helped I think. <shrug>
