    Your question is basically.. did he have a hand or was he trying to improve or draw?

    Your PFR should narrow it to a reasonably good hand, especially
    since he's giving you position.

    Your flop bet got called which means he's got something. I often
    check when the A shows if I see the plr turn over AX alot.

    You check the river and he checks. Here I would put him on
    a draw for a flush. Does he tend to play AXs or AX?

    When the flush doesn't happen and he bets
    I may consider that he's bluffing a busted draw and call. You
    did good to check along the way but your call is not unreasonable.

    A read on the plr may have saved you a couple of bets.

    Overall I think you played it fair.
