OK. So I think the hands above, you know, I’m feeling pretty good here. I feel like I did OK, and at this stage in the tourney there are 14 players left, I am 2nd in chips. I start thinking to myself I can at least coast into the final table, make the money, and then push for the win. This next hand devastated me. I will never forget this hand. I don't have time to look through the whole history, but here are a couple hands I'll comment on. You'll notice a theme in my suggestions.

Hand 404801204 [Q3o]
I'd be tempted to push this. You have some fold equity with this stack, but you need to be getting some chips. Chances are you take the blinds with this move.

Hand 404801378 [KQo]
Why are you limping KQo with this stack? You have 9k left... only 5 times the blinds. Push this hand.

Hand 404802408 [QQ]
Push here. You have 7700 left with blinds at 600/1200. At this stage you should be pushing or folding. Making moves like this raise will clue people in what your bets mean.

Hand 404802621 [K8s]
One limper to your big blind, I'd be tempted to push here. You only have 5xblinds.... although the limper has 33k to your 8k, you can make a dent in him, so he'll think twice about calling you. Make a move here.

Hand 404803627 [44] (last hand)
WTF are you limping 44 for? You have 7720 left, blinds are 800/1600. You are CLEARLY in push/fold situation. This hand you should be shoving in right away.

These are the only ones I looked at (I read bottom up). When your stack is that low (5 times blinds or less), you are in push fold mode. Don't try cute raises, and don't wait for great cards. Q3o on the button? People might disagree with this one, but I'd be pushing that. The blinds didn't have enormous stacks that they could afford to call that move with nothing... so take those blinds. KQo is not a limping hand in this situation. Push it, and take a chance to possibly double up. QQ... push it. Your last hand was the worst... what are you limping 44 with that stack for? Push it. At least the big blind MIGHT fold 86o (probably not in this case).

My final suggestion is to buy HoH2.... it will explain all of this far better than I can.

Thanks for taking the time to look at some of this for me. Yes, I saw a common theme - lol. But since I am somewhat of a beginner, I had forgotten the push or fold mode when the stack gets that low.

Couple comments:

That last hand - ugh. I knew I had totally screwed the pooch when he showed the 86 hand. I realized on that hand that the push would have won me some chips. By that stage in the tourney, I was letting my dissapointment get to me.

The Q3o hand, if you notice, the SB showed AA, so no way he was folding. Not to say that I shouldnt have pushed there anyway, but then there wouldnt have been all those other wondeful hands left for me to suck at and post here - lol.

Hey,

This is the perfect way to improve your game, so keep posting and asking questions!

After reading through more of the hands, I have one general comment. You have to show a lot more aggression to finish up higher. You tend to call and limp more than raise and bet. You can't wait to hit big hands, or the blinds will swallow you up (which they did a bit). If the table folds to you on the button (or even CO), put in a decent raise and take the blinds. If somebody is stealing from you a lot (or you're SB), don't be afraid to raise over top to resteal. You need to stay ahead of the blinds, and this means trying to take them roughly once an orbit.

A couple other hands worth commenting on:

Hand 404792100 [AKo]
I liked that you reraised preflop here, although I would have raised more, maybe 6000 or 7000. Maybe I'm push happy, but that's an option here too. When the flop comes up rags, you didn't bet after showing preflop aggression. Put out a 1/2 pot bet here. Another option that may have worked here is a check-raise. He put out a weakish bet on the flop, so reraise him and try to take it down. Instead you folded, which showed the guy that he could push you off hands. He seemed to use that a couple times against you. Don't let him!

Hand 404792377 [87o]
I noticed this a few times... in this stage of the tournament you have to worry about your cards less, and worry about your position more. This is an ideal time to throw in a 3xBB raise to take the blinds. If the BB calls and the flop comes up rags, raise again.

Hand 404795187 [KJs]
You were SB here. Button put in a decent raise. I don't like the call here at all. I'd either be folding this or raising it to $10000 (or all-in). If he's raising with something real, then your KJ might not be good anyways even if you hit something on the flop. If you had noticed he was doing this a lot from the button, don't be afraid to raise big here to find out if he means it. I'm not suggesting to always do this... it should largely depend on your read of the guy. Your stack is decent here though, so a fold is fine. I don't think a call is a good idea though. Keep an eye out for these opportunities. If this guy had a smaller stack, I'd push over top of him for sure.

Hand 404800127 [AKo]
You should have pushed all-in overtop of Sethug here. He only has 8k... you are likely a decent favourite here, if not dominating him. At worst you're probably a coin flip. Push over him, and give him the option of folding. You seem to prefer calling/limping over raising. With strong hands like this, always give yourself another way to win (getting the other guy to fold). On the flop he was going to push no matter what, so you still may have had him beat here. Make the decision easier.

That's about all I've got. Basically try to use more aggression to take pots when you don't have the hands. Remember, the flop usually misses the other guy too.... Have a read through some of the hand histories from the bigger MTT players here. Michael1123, ilikeaces... you'll see how they take pots with no cards.

I really feel like I have learned a lot from this. I still made a little bit of money for finishing 9th, but what I have learned just from your reponses will be invaluable to me. It's easy to read these strategies posted here and say to yourself "I'm gonna do that". Its entirely another to actually see the opportunities in real time, and then have the balls to execute them. I know that when I am able to do that, I will be at the next level. I have "flashes of brilliance" here and there - lol. Now i just need to make it my game.

As a newb to MTT's myself, I thought I would chime in here.

I would play tight all tournament through just playing my cards.....however, now if its folded to me in decent position, it doesn't matter what my cards are, I throw out a 3xBB raise....if everyone folds, wonderful!...if not, you can let this one go, but you are always trying to sniff out weakness.

Even if you just play MTT's for entertainment only, it is much more fun to take down pots with nothing then just playing your cards......I still suck, but I know that by continuing to play aggressive I will eventually put myself in a place to win one of these things.
