If he just rivered a jack and you call, you lose chips, and you let him draw out on you for free.

    Default bet somewhere

bet somewhere to try to push the pot or create a fold .. remember good players win pots at the showdown .. great players win w/o a showdown.. whenver u can push someone out of hand do it .. either pre flop .. post flop turn ect.. don't let them see free cards either.. even if u bet 3x-4x the bb off the flop he might put u on the ace and u take an easy blind .. food for thought

but you can push out hands that have you beat. if you want to put money in a pot like this, dont be the moron calling.

errr are you calling me a moron?

if i never get called by a better hand, then the only way i will make money is from a worse hand buying the pot.

    it's an mtt....

betting into 3 others with an "underpair" is not how I like to waste my chips.

The call is fine, don't push your luck with betting the turn though, you could be called by any pair on the board.

hehe no im not, but seriously in questionable situations like this wouldnt you like to give yourself some extra outs by betting for fold equity than calling and praying he didnt hit his jack?

i think id just fold the river because i think (even a dumb person) plays the same when he pairs his jack.

    anyway, good read.

he was a presence at the table. always chatting and always trying to make moves. i didn't do a good job of illustrating the level of fishiness he personified in my first post, though.

Im with ya on this one, betting out there (postflop, turn or river) is suicide.

    Nice play.

Why do people keep saying he could have paired the river? It's the second J. If he was beat he was beat on the turn.

g00t play.... in terms of chips it's really a non issue, but I like showing him he can't bluff you out, let him make goofy river moves against someone else.

People let me tell you about my best friends...
Nice call Gabe. And I think you played the flop and turn ok as well. I might have bet the turn just to see if you could steal it. But, given you had two big stacks in there--one that was a wildcard--caution was appropriate, in my mind.

yeah, the play was fine althgough betting would have also been ok since you had possition (on two players) and they would have folded to your raise. However I know that checking was also a good move since you had a good read on the villain and were going to call a river bet anyway

yes, i know i meant betting the turn or flop after people check to you, but honestly i would have played it like you, just checking and calling the river bet...nice read gabe and nice play overall

Thats not a good time to try and take the pot on the turn or river. On the turn someone might have hit their straight or flush, and with a fish still in he might call with K-7.
