Default Key Hands from Slump Breaking SnG - Plz Critique

Key hands I’d like to discuss in my latest SnG
Sorry, I don’t have exact hand #’s but you can tell lvl’s from the blinds
I’ll label them for reference for later discussion. Sorry, no converter for Pokerroom yet....

Limped in, caught the nuts and after 2 raises I thought it’d be worth risking my stack to take a stab at these jokers. Paid off.

This was the very next hand after I hit my nut set. I think I played this okay, although my flop bet was a little strong just to get a read, but I wanted to push him out if he was drawing for A or K. I was prepared to call him all-in if he reraised, but looking back that would have been dumb- I had a stack and I got cocky. This wont be the last time he slow played aces this game.

First in, looking back this was probably reckless this early, but it worked. Lvl 4 blinds, time to steal? Probably want to do this with A8s or better… what do you guys think?

Okay, this was by far the controversial hand I played. Let me explain. I’ve seen this guy play out only 2 hands, but slow playing aces. He’s been calling a lot, especially big bets on the flop, folding to smaller bets on the River. I’ve established myself as a tight player, throwing big bets with good hands. I figure he plays real tight, premium cards, but he’s quick to fold if he doesn’t hit. I’m looking to go over his head betting the pot on the flop. He calls and I figure I’m up against Aces again and this is going to be an uphill battle from here on out. When the Ace hits I’m ready to fold against any action. I never would have guessed he’d call a 700 bet on a draw. How would anyone else played this out?

Too strong? I figured I’d rather take a $1,000 pot right there than risking the flush to draw out. Had this been a rainbow I would have given a modest reraise hoping to confuse him.

This was the very next hand again. I think this may have been my 2nd poorest play. I wanted to raise this, but people were starting to get desperate and making all-in moves. I also didn’t want to seem too aggressive playing 2 consecutive hands strong from these positions. Didn’t want a coinflip. I felt way out of position especially with 2 callers ahead of me. Now my buddy yelled at me for not betting the river but here’s why. There are four of us in this hand, and this is a very tight table. I didn’t want to see anyone show AJ. Maybe I’m a p**sy, but I’m vary wary of hitting straights that aren’t the nuts. And being out of position, I figured I was lucky to make it this far holding onto JJ.

Granted I haven’t posted the full tourney report, so you can’t see what I was dealt prior, but trust me it wasn’t pretty. I was getting total rainbow rags and I couldn’t survive another go around. I was ready for a lopsided coin flip and just pray. On 2nd inspection it looks like he was just looking to steal the blinds and he wasn’t willing to risk his tourney life. Any comments?

The very next hand… okay, this really seems reckless and I swear I don’t remember doing it. These guys are all playing very tight, but three consecutive blind steals. I know I wouldn’t pull this crap again.

Basically I wanted to isolate this all-in. Twotone is my buddy, so I knew he wouldn’t call and anything short of AA or KK the chip leader wouldn’t risk an auto 3rd if I beat him.

Okay, I’m posting this hand to pat myself on the back (or get flamed), but this is probably my first honest big play/heads-up read ever- and is really the turning point against this guy. At this point he’s taken a number of the last pots and I’m looking weak. Looking back, calling his preflop raise was probably a bad idea, yes? Discuss. So I check after thinking a while. He starts to think…. And takes a while. I realize varying decision speed is an advanced play to trap, but I didn’t think this guy was advanced. He thought about the raise and then bet the minimum at me. Immediately I reraise all in. I hope this makes all you veterans chuckle, but you’re little boy Rubix13 is growing up so fast. He folds. Best bluff of my poker career (it’s not a very long career).

I know it worked for me, but was this an okay play overall. Q10o, not very strong, but worth a raise… should I have folded? Probably a bad call.

Overall this was one of the tightest tables I’ve played at the $5 buy-in. I was very happy to see better play instead of the usual All-in game of attrition. This was my first time in the money after a 5 game slump and my first first in quite a long time. I thought I played pretty well, but I still need a lot of improvement. Please criticize. Thank you.

Hand 1: The JJ guy had an excuse but wth was the 77 guy in there, nice pot

Hand 2: Riding on the crest of a wave, we've all been there, at least you learnt a bit about this guy and got a read on him. (maybe flop bet was a bit big)

Hand 3: I wouldn't like to steal until at least the next level and with a better kicker, but you got away with it, so props.

Hand 4: Yeah, not much to say here, don't know what he was doing calling 700, either of you might have repped the A.

Hand 5: I would of just tried to not give him pot odds and hope really, but your's was a good choice and probably the most sensible.

Hand 6: Bet the river...a small bet would give you information...even if someone reraised me I would probably call.
  3. #3
Hand 1 : I dont mind the limp from UTG this early, as long as your only playing for a set. If you want to get serious with this hand, raise it to $100

Hand 2 : I doubt I'd be able to let this hand go...but if you study the HH, he played it exactly like aces. Just a small re-raise after the guy when in, then just a call when you raise it to 300. Then he smooth calls again on the flop, this time for probably half his stack. At this point you cant really expect anything other than AA, KK or any of the pocket pairs that make a set.

Hand 3 : Don't give yourself stealing hand requirements. Let the situation decide for you. There are 2 players to act after you, and they both can be considered middle stacked. If they both play tight, this play is profitable with most any cards.

Hand 4 : Don't bet so much on the flop. You can figure out if he has a hand just with a 3/4 or 1/2 pot bet. That will save you a lot in the long run. You put out 700 with king high and get called, your pretty pot commited; only 800 left into a $2000 pot. You lucked out on this hand, this guy should have folded it to you on the flop(or preflop). Against a halfway decent opponent, your going broke here.

Hand 5 : A limp from UTG most of the time is a fairly strong hand, I would guess 2 face cards. When he comes out firing on the flop, you want to get as much chips as possible. If you know he's aggressive and he'll come after you on the turn, I wouldn't mind just calling on the flop. Then you could check raise him on the turn for all your chips.

Hand 6 : You have to reraise preflop here. You dont want weak Ax, Kx to get in cheap.

Hand 8 : Nothing wrong with moving in with 9T, your waaay behind in chips, not to mention you only have a little over 2BB.

Hand 9 : A little risky, I dont ususally like to mess with the bigstack unless I have a hand.

Hand 11 : Why would you risk your tournament when you dont need to? If your getting called, it will probably be AQ, AK, AA, KK, QQ, leaving you dead. I don't mind just doing the ususal minraise to 1600, that way if they fold you can actually show that your not raising with complete trash. (since stretch is all in)

Hand 12 : By no means is calling preflop a bad play. Heads up K9o is above average. With the blinds at 500/1000, you cant just wait for premium hands.

Hand 13 : Obviouslly you woulndt want to put in 5000 with QT, but it isnt as bad as it sounds. Limping his hand was weak, and with QT and I think a raise is a good play (depeding on how much he completes) The push seemed like a desperation move, like he just wants to see if he can get lucky with a marginal hand. Since it only costs 1800 more to get an almost 10000 pot, you have to call.
  4. #4
Hand#1: I dont like playing TT out of position with two other players, Any overcard hitting the board is a scare card for you, I would consider folding preflop. I would also not go all in on the flop, I would call hoping for a raise from the 1st guy, if there is no raise I would go AI on the turn.

    Hand#2: Shit happens

Hand#3: I think it is a bit too early to steal, especailly with a weak hand like A2

Hand#4: Dont like your play here, sorry. The PFR was OK, although I would sometime limp with KQ from early position. The flop bet was aggressive and pretty much had you pot comitted, I would not have bet so much, probably 400-500.
Once you bet the flop and checked the turn when the A hit you were asking for him to bluff, if I was him I would raise you here with anything.

Hand#5: I would have bet the flop, I would not want anybody drawing on me on this board, once you check and got raised I think the AI was fine

    Hand#6: Bet the river

Hand#8: You did not have much choice
