Did I play this right, or should I have called/raised on the flop?

umm you played the hand totally wrong...first of all there are 4 limpers before you, and you only raised it to 40, giving everyone and their mother correct pot odds to call with any feasable hand. should have raised it to at least 100. then on the flop of only 1 overcard and a 2-flush, you only bet 30 into a 200 dollar pot, what is the purpose of this bet? assuming you raised the correct amount preflop, the pot would probably be heads up, then you should have bet about 150 on the flop, and he probably would have folded. if not, then you are beat on the turn. not to be an asshole, but this hand was played ridiculously bad, you are not ready to play $20 sngs

Thanks. You are right about the bet amounts. The reason for the small bets is because I though a larger one would have scared everyone out of the pot at the start of the tourney. At least that's my experience at the $10 tables. What I might not have taken into account is that I have a tight agressive image with most of those opponents, and they will fold to a larger bet from me, while at the $20's I am an unknown.

Went on to place 3rd, by the way, which is decent enough althoug the play was tough enough I decided to stick to 10 for a while longer (even before reading your post.

    Thanks for the insightful reply.

in early level SNG's you shouldnt necessarily stick to the "#x bb" raise because typically the blinds are so small compared to the stack sizes that the raise doesnt mean all that much, meaning you will get much more callers. and JJ is an EXTREMELY vulnerable hand and you do not want more than 1 caller. then a general rule of thumb is to add a BB to your raise for every limper before you and maybe 1 more for the people behind you. since you have 4 limpers before you, and the blinds are so low, you need to take into account both factors, meaning you pretty much have to throw out a huge raise like 10x BB or $100. trust me, you want to scare everyone out of the pot, you dont want more than 1 person in this hand, so slam a big raise down and get everyone out.

    himself fucker.
    Raise more preflop.

Don't weak bet at a scary board.

A better line would be simply to limp and fold on that flop.

Blinds are still tiny. No reason to make a huge pot with a J flush draw.

I must say I agree 100% with everything Bair noted.
This game play makes me consider jumping over to play on Absolute.

also, i think your comments about them folding are not warranted. that is not a hand to slow play or min-bet with. further, if they fold you win. simple. the saying goes.... "it's better to win a small pot than lose a big one".

I tend to agree with rilla this early in EP I'm mostly playing JJ for set, over pair after trying to win it pre flop.
