    Default 49th out of 860 (have a question)

    this is directed towards soupie a little... i played my first mtt today in awhile...was only a 5+1 but its a start...as it was getting near the money which was the top 90... i was 8th in chips around 16k. I then started to catch big cards and standard raise with them, however i kept getting cold called then big betted after the flop. This wouldnt be a problem if i was hitting my cards, however i wasn't even hitting a pair if i didn't already have a pair. Example would be a/k suited and flopping 5/8/10 none of my suit....or j/j and a/k/2 flopping...just steadily losing chips due to being in the right posistion with the big cards, just not hitting or flopping what i needed....my question to you soupie or anyone who cares to read is...would you ever just not play these hands since there is no need to risk any chips...5th in chips with 90 people left is good posistion...well let me hear what you guys have to say before i say anything else...

    im at work, or i would ask you this on vent, if your on...however i cant have vent while at work.

    If the question is "Do I fold AK/JJ when I can open the pot to save chips?" the answer is no, I don't care how many chips you have.

    And in spot 8 (or 5) with 90 people left, you have plenty of work left to get a decent final table stack. You may be able to limp there (doubt it) but you're going to be wishing you'd played the JJ when you move in with K6o because you've ante'd yourself to death.

    Helpful tip from... someone here that I always do is figure what the average chip stack will be once the tourney hits ITM and then what it'll be at the final table. It puts that "big stack" you have into perspective. But even were I to have a FT size stack with 90 left, I'm still playing AK and JJ. How much action are you going to get if you're sitting on a huge mountain of chips playing once every 50 hands? I made a FT this weekend - 7 of us under or at 200K, two over 1 million, 1 million is better.

    there's nothing you can do if luck is bending you over the table... just keep making good decisions and you'll make it to the deep money soon...

    if something like this happens i tend to push harder

    harder = all in

    not the best strategy but i rather be all in and put the decision on him and not worry about post flop play

    depends on the situation. With position and shortstacked why not? Any other time I don't like it. If you can't make a post-flop decision you shouldn't be playing

    i can make post flop decisions very well...it was happening that they would call preflop come around to me in late posistion with a A/K or a J/J and i would pop it 4x or even 5x bb and they would push ont he flop to me...and i wouldnt hit...

    You have to play those hands, you cannot lay them down, especially when you are in position and with a big stack of chips. What are you proposing to do with your chips otherwise, just sit tight and not play another hand??

    Also after you had not hit anything on the flop, did the hands show down to the river, or did you merely fold to a bet having hit nothing on the flop?? Also why only standard raise with those hands, and keep getting called? Raise 6x 7x BB and see if they still call. I suspect you were just on the wrong table, or playing too cautiously.

    You played fine. Ran into bad luck late. It sucks, but it happens. Patience really is the key. But I definitely understand the frustration. I too have been getting consistent just out of the big money finishes, and am just drooling for the chance to finally catch some cards late in a tourney.
