Default good move or just lucky?

Last week sometime I playing in a ~160 person tourney on UB and we were down to somewhere near the bubble. I don't remember the exact numbers, but I think the blinds were either 2/400 or 3/600 and I was at about 8k chips.

The table was pretty aggressive preflop so far. I was in about mid position, and two guys in front of me limped in (I think they both had me covered, but not by much). I looked down and had 88 and thought I would try to mix it up a bit. I pushed all in, and fortunately everyone folded, even the limpers who thought about it for a while before they folded. When I pushed, I didn't even think about how many people were left to act. Should I have worried about that?

I wasn't in dire need of the chips, but I figured this was a perfect time to steal the sizeable pot.

Is this play going to work more times than not? Only on the bubble?
Would a regular 3-4xbb raise be sufficient?

    No clearcut answer.

How good is your post flop game? What are people limping with?

88 is a hand that can double you up or knock you out. You risked getting called by a hand that had you dominated or by a race with any two overs.

With two limpers in front and a world of action still behind you, I like the push here when you don't have a huge stack compared to the blinds. If these guys are limping that late, they are (generally) also the type to call a 3-4x BB raise.

It's not a bad move, in most cases you'll take it down right there and avoid a coinflip. A few times you'll get hit by a slow-playing AA, KK, etc., but not too often. Probably less than 50% of the time you'll end up coinflipping, mostly dependant on the size of the others' stacks and their style of play.

Had you been a bit farther ahead of the blinds, I'd definately go with the limp-in and try to catch a set with 88 or 99. But considering the pot alone would give you a considerable boost, it was a good move.

Yeah if you had maybe 2.5x the chip stack you had I'd lean to limping for the set, here it's a nice push spot. I agree with Char, these high blind limpers are usually going to take a flop unless you make it pricey, so a non AI raise doesn't make much sense.
