Default trying to figure out these damned sngs ...

well bear with me, i've been playing for only a few months and i can't decide whether to play ring or sngs. i kind of go back and forth between the two and will probably continue to do so until i either a) do better in one or the other or b) decide i really like one or the other better.

i started out playing $1 sngs on stars and did well at first. the more i played them, though, the worse i did for some reason. i tried a couple $5 sngs here and there, found out they're played wayyy tighter than the $1 ones (which makes sense!) i eventually got a little tired of losing all the time and gave them up for a while.

came back to them a couple days ago after rereading various ftr posts regarding sngs. i've been finding that i play terribly at the start, get REALLY small stacked, and end up relying on doubling up late in the tourney. not positive exactly what happens, although i think i get a little carried away with certain bets once i'm in the pot. also, getting bad cards so that i'm only seeing 15% of the flops doesn't help much ...

i played a two table $5 sng today and actually managed to win it. i have, however, a million questions regarding how i played it. i don't, for a second, believe that i played well just because i won it (i attribute this win to luck really ... and the fact that once i was big stack, everyone folded to my aggression). if anyone here has time, it would be awesome if you could look at how i played it, PARTICULARY the beginning hands BEFORE i started going all in once i was in a desperate position with my 700 chips. i would like opinions on how i played those hands because i think the start of the tourneys is where i'm weakest and is the reason why i can't win them consistently. i posted the rest of the tourney in case anyone would like to critique the way i played after i (amazingly) became chip leader.

i deleted all the hands in which i folded preflop, especially at the beginning of the tourney. at the start of the tourney i folded a zillion hands because they just weren't good (according to me ...). when i was chip leader, i only folded if someone before me raised or if i had terrible terrible cards (eg. 72o).

here are some specific questions and some main points about the tourney if you don't have time to read the entire history:

#15: should i have folded preflop? sometimes i go too far with my low pocket pairs. i'm also sure i should have played the flop differently.

#20: probably should have folded preflop? haha.

#29: i was really mad at myself after this hand, was thinking that i should have bet on the turn or river and he probably would have folded. right or wrong thinking?

so basically after playing only three hands (the only flops i saw since the start of the tourney), i was down to 700 chips with the blinds going up and up.

#48: risky to go all in with pocket eights? i figured it was now or never. i did it twice with pocket 8s and survived both times ... haha! lucky ...

#64: here's where i started trying to steal blinds ...

#77: question!! if haien had reraised me all in here, should i have called? i'm thinking no, but tell me if i'm wrong. i min reraised him because i had a feeling he was trying to steal the pot here.

#98: dunno why i folded this, i think i was still annoyed about losing the last hand.

#100: what do you think he had here? jacks? he went pretty far with the betting. should i have gone all in earlier? or should i not have gone all in at all?

#104: should i have folded to his reraise? or no, simply because of my stack advantage? for some reason i just didn't believe he had anything.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH for reading this, and i appreciate any constructive criticism you have. fire away, i can take it

  2. #2
#15: Yes, fold preflop. His raise made it too expensive. Once that flop comes, however, I'm probably going to raise him once to see where I really stand. He is probably on two overcards, meaning that this flop didn't help him.

#20: In late position, I might raise this preflop. I'm certainly not folding when it's been folded to me. I probably would have bet slightly bigger on the flop, and based my play from there on reads. Based on the cards alone, I'm not letting 625 (pot plus his bet) go for a price of 150. I'd have shown this down.

#29: Fold preflop. You're out of position with a mediocre hand. Anyone with a peice of that flop is probably going to stick around. Whether or not you could buy him off depends on how he plays, but I doubt it was going to happen (he called a large bet on the flop, after all).

#36, 41, 46, 48: I like all of these hands. Your stack is small enough that to have any chance at taking down a pot, you need to push. From there it's up to the cards, and I think you'd have had the best hand going in each time. The image you developed doing this made them willing to call with lessor hands (and btw, of these hands, 88 is the strongest; don't underestimate pocket pairs - when you're short stack, they can give you the slight edge you need to try to make a play and come back).

#55: Given that they've recently seen you're pushing reasonable hands, part of me likes a stop and go play here. JJ is strong enough to make such a play, I think. I'd raise to 450 preflop and then push any flop. Slightly more risky, but I want to get more chips out of it.

#59: You're no longer playing push and fold poker with the stack you have now. I make a standard raise here and push when encountering aggression. (Though if smooth called, I'd let it go on the flop if there had been an A with no Q)

#64: You go from putting your entire stack in to min-raising? This raise should have been to 600 preflop.

#77: If he had re-raised you all-in, you let it go. If he actually has a part of that board, you're drawing to 3 outs. No chance you want to risk an extra 2k on a 5k pot that you're only 12% to win.

#78: HORRID CALL preflop. QJ is a decent hand HU or 3-way, perhaps. 5 way, facing an all-in, LET IT GO. You don't want to lose the chips here. He'll be out soon enough anyway. If he was shorter stacked and you where in the blinds, this would be a different story, but when he still has a somewhat reasonable amount of chips, drop this without a second thought.

#82: Reasonable preflop call. After your steal attempt, the pot was large enough to warrant calling with any 2. You (obviously) fold here if he has a bigger stack or you hadn't raised before he pushed.

#97: I question this call. Had pokerstars been doing something to make you think KJ might be the best hand? From what I've seen he seems fairly reserved, so I'd probably let this go.

#98: Nothing is wrong with the fold here. You're not quite even money to have the best hand preflop, and you've been stealing successfully a lot. I don't mind changing pace a bit here and there.

#100: With the K on the board, I'd bet smaller on the river to avoid scaring his Jx hand away.

#104: I think you were beat here, but the aggression saved you. I assume you'd have let it go if he had continued to raise.

I skipped analyzing some at the end and started to write less, but read them all. My over all analysis is that you are a little too passive early on, once you started to push a lot and make a stack you switched into way too aggressive. Against better players you would have lost a lot of chips on a lot of those moves. I didn't really see a single hand where you made a hand and played it standardly and extracted chips the old fashion way. Almost all of them were bluffs (some good some bad) that your opponents never called.

Your short stack game is good. You're pushing at the right times and takign shots at doubling up while taking down some blinds and increasing your stack. Your pre-flop game from the big stack is OK, you are pushing the table around and taking blinds and getting people to fold. Your post flop play is pretty wreckless though. You never once gave your opponents credit for a hand. You bluffed and if you got played back at, you would just re-raise. Usually they were folding...You were lucky. This kind of wreckless aggression will cost you in the long run, but here it paid off. Keep reading these forums and studying up and i think you can turn your game into a consistent SnG winner. Good luck

Hand 15: With low pocket pairs like 55, you want to get in as cheap as possible, and hope to catch a 3rd one to make you a set. When this happens you get paid off a lot of the time by people with big cards who caught a piece of the flop, or someone with an over pair if the flop is all unders. Here you probably should ahve folded pre flop, 1/10th of your stack is too much in an SNG to play to hope and catch a set. Once the flop comes down 322 though, your hand is actually good. You have an over pair to the board. The initial raisers bet is very weak compared to the pot size at this point...At these limits this could mean slow play (i have seen people limp AA in and then bet small like this, it's a bad play but beginners make it) but therse a better chance he just has two big cards and missed the flop. I probably would re raise here and see what he does. Fold to aggression but stay aggressive if he gets passive.

Hand 20: This isn't too bad. You're in the cut off with a reasonable hand, not a very good hand, but reasonable. Usually most people will fold this early in an SNG, but if i'm going to play it i will usually open it up for a raise from the cut off (which is 1 spot to the right of the dealer if you arent familiar with the term) and hope the button folds so you are just against the blinds. After the flop i think you played it ok, half the pot bet with 2nd pair, and then slowed down when people called you. By the river you have pretty much as bad a hand as possible without having nothing at all (any Q, 9, J beats you, and no ones sticking aroudn without one of those anyway) so it's a good fold.

Hand 29: KJ is not a very good hand to play from early position. You are under the gun here (the first spot to the left of the big blind) and try to limp it in. Only try this on passive tables where no one is raising pre flop, and only continue after the flop if you hit the flop pretty hard because you are out of position. Just fold this one pre flop. Once you bluff the flop and get called, your opponent has you beat here. Check/fold because he has a 5 or a 2, he was the big blind after all and got to see the flop for free so he could easily have a strong hand here.

Hand 36: You are short stacked here and only have about 7 times the big blind left. This is a good hand to push with, but only if you think you're going to get a caller. You are the big blind already, so you're really only stealing back your own chips. Only the small blind calls, so you will have position in this hand. I think raisign to about 325 and then pushing the flop is the best play here. Your hand is most likely better than his pre flop, so it will probably be post flop. Pot commit yourself by betting as much as you think your opponent will call, and push the flop regardless. This is the equivalent of getting himt o call your all in pre flop, but it increases the likelihood that he will call and you won't just take down his blind.

Hand 41: Pushing AJ is a much better play here. There are a lot of people to act after you so you are more likely to get 1 call, your stack is still short so even if people fold the chips you gain from the blinds are significant for you. Nh.

Hand 46: Same as the hand above, good push.

Hand 48: Good push again. especially since you've pushed twice in the last 5 hands, you're more likely to get a call from a worse hand that thinks you're bullshitting them with all your pushing. He calls with a worse hand and you take down a pot and are back in it, Nh.

Hand 55: You can afford to slow down here because you're starting to build a stack again, but the same thing applies from the hand i read before. You've been pushing a lot, so you might get a call from a weaker hand here who is fed up with it. I like this push too from under the gun, the blinds are still significant for you and JJ has a good shot of holding up if you get 1 caller. It looks like your short stack play is pretty good, you're pushing/folding with the right hands at the right times.

Hand 58: Lol you are getting a lot of decent hands when you're fairly short stacked and are pushing them. At this point its getting a little riskier, this guy just raised infront of you and he has you covered. Do you think he will fold to your push or do you think your hand is the best? If he calls you are at best a coin flip and at worst are dominated by a bigger pocket pair. This push depends on table image for me, if opponent has been opening a lot of pots for min raises i might push with 88 given my stack size, but if he has been tighter and more conservative i would probably just let this hand go because i don't want to race now that i just built my chip stack back up.

Hand 59: Here you can definitely afford to play this hand strait up, you don't need to push all in and get a call. QQ is a strong hand, i don't want to just take down the blinds with it. Unless i am very confident that i will get a loose call here from someone who is on tilt because of all the all-ins, i think you should jsut open this pot up for 600 and play it from there. You would be kicking yourself if everyone folded this one to you and you took down 300 chips for the blinds.

Hand 64: K5 is technically a favorite over a random hand (which is what the big blind has when you are in the SB and he hasnt acted yet). If you are just trying to steal his blind, your raise is too weak. min raising from the SB gives the big blind very good odds to call heads up, he's getting 3:1 to call and he gets to play the rest of the hand in position on the SB raiser. Raise to 550 if you want to steal his blind, after all your hand is probably a favorite against his random one. Once the A comes down on the flop i like your 1/2 pot continuation bet. Villain folds as expected. Not a terrible hand, but raise more pre flop to steal the BB from the SB in the future.

(This is a 27 person stars SnG right? So this is pretty much the bubble)

Hand 66: KJ isn't a bad hand from the cut off with 6 players left. Played fine, good continuation on the flop when checked to you. Just be prepared to let KJ go if your opponent pushes pre flop...It's not that strong of a hand and usually a call/raise pre flop means a monster.

Hand 67: You are playing the role of chip leader pretty well. Aggressive pre flop and continuing on the flop where people are folding to your aggression. Just be careful here if you get played back at, eventually someone is going to make a hand since they know you are betting out every flop, they are going to trap you. I think this hand is fine.

Hand 70: Very risky turn bet from out of position. Like i said above, be careful if you get played back at. When i first read your bet on the turn i was expecting villain to push, most people who call the flop there short stacked are ready to go all in. Good play pre flop and good continuation, but i think i let this hand go once he calls my flop bet. Wrecklessly aggressive can win you hands, but in the long run i think this play will cost you. Be aware of your image, your opponents know you are being aggressive with your big stack, they want to make hands and get paid for them. This villain was a dumby i think but more often than not you are gonna wind up paying off a pair of aces here with your aggressive bluff.

Hand 77: If he had re raised all in of course you shouldn't have called. You have Q high, probably a favorite over only about 25% of the possible hands that exist in hold em with this flop. Your min raise isn't bad, this flop is raggy and he called you pre flop, he probably doesn't have much here. If he calls though you should immediately slow down and check/fold from there on unless a Q falls on the turn.

Hand 97: Easy fold. KJ looks pretty but is crap if anyone is showing you aggression pre flop. Any hand with an ace is a favorite over it. FOLD.

    Hand 98: Good fold.

Hand 100: Nice hand, played fine. Tournament is yours from this point on.

Hand 104: I think fold to his re raise on the flop. re-raising him back is just giving him chips. I'm sure you had the worse hand here but your opponent was timid and gave you this pot. Unless you had a read that told you he was weak and would fold, just let this go. You dont need to double him up with a garbage hand just because you are too proud to let a pot go that you bet into. You're aggressiveness is over the top in this hand it could have cost you but you lucked out.

Hand 105: Nh i play the same.

Hand 106: Good fold, i might just fold from the SB though.

    Hand 107: Gg, played fine.
