Default To Bet ot Not to Bet... That is the question

I raised UTG 3x the BB (90) with pocket queens and had one caller. The flop comes Q/J/10 giving me trips but the q/j are suited in spades. The pot is now 225. I lead out with a bet of 200 and quickly got called. I paused before I lead out again. The pot is now 625. I bet again (which now I think was stupid but its over and done with it) I bet 400 and again got called. The card was a 2 of clubs. The river comes and its a 8 of spades. Placing two straights on the board and a flush on the board. If he was chasing, he made his hand with the flush or the straight. I bet (again a dumb move looking back) and he thought about it and raised me and I layed down my set. Should I have checked it down after the cold call on the flop or what should I have done differently?

I would have pushed on the turn to screw any draw into a lose/lose, weaker hands will call and if he flopped the nuts you still have outs.

I think you played it fine. Leading out on the turn is a must -- you can't let him draw to the flush for free, and if he has the straight, so be it. On the river, you can either check and fold to a large bet, or you can make a blocking bet and fold if raised.
