Default something else about moving up

    Saw this whilst reading Cardplayer.com

Even though it is slightly tilted towards ring, I think the general principles can be applied to SnGs.

To put it another way, to excel at poker, you must always play within your stress comfort zone. You should, of course, never gamble with money you can’t afford to lose, as not only would this be incredibly stressful, but it would be very irresponsible. A bankroll of 200-300 big bets is considered standard for a limit ring game, but I find that I greatly reduce my playing stress by having at least 1,000 big bets for any game I play. However, you should not base what limit you play simply on your bankroll. You must be as emotionally ready to lose a certain amount of money as you are financially in order to justify playing in a particular game. If you are a millionaire but are not emotionally ready to lose more than $1,000 in a given session, stick to $10-$20 limits or smaller. Earlier in my poker career, I played in games in which I was fiscally prepared, but not emotionally prepared, and some of the big losses in those games were emotionally devastating and very stressful. Those lessons were very painful to learn, and I hope you heed my advice and stick to games in which you are emotionally prepared to lose at least 50 big bets, because it can and will happen frequently, even if you are a great player who rarely tilts.

in a 10-20 game you can lose 1k really quick.....but i follow this advice to a T. I play SNGs with a 150 buy in bank roll and limit with at least 600 big bets.

It works both ways I think - you cant play in games you cannot emotionally take the lose, and on the other hand you cannot play good poker when you dont care about the money.
If you dont care if you lose the buyin then you will just throw it away

Not true in sngs.....if i care about the buy in i push less and play worse because of it IMO.

I think he meant in the regards that you are more likely to make marginally bad calls when you don't care about losing. Difference between making some coinflips or sucking out and actually making good pushes.

This is a subject that I am not sure what to think. Due to my nature...I don't get riled up over much. It suits me well for poker because I can lose lots and have it not affect me. I know I am not immune I just know that I haven't hit that point yet...I have previously followed the 30 buyin rule...but the more I talk to people I am finding they prefer more. Now if it is due to variance or because it affects them emotionally I do not know.

What I meant is that your best play is in the level where you are not scared to play in but on the other hand you care about the money.

And by too low a buy in it may be not that you dont care about losing the money but also you dont care about winning the money.
For an extreme example I do not think someone with $1000 bankroll really cares enough about winning a $1 Sng and will play his best to win $5 at the end.
This will cause you to make marginal calls and concentrate less, and not play to the best of your ability

yes, i play for a living, my roll is my source of income........and i play levels with higher variance and do not want to be affected by 20-40 buy in swings.
