MY 1st $5 SNG on MY new Bankroll, tips needed

[Alameda]

I just got my new $100 bank roll and this is the first tournament ive played, any tips or advice on how i could improve my game would be GREAT, I chose to post this Sng because despite the result, I felt i played very poorly and I know i made alot of mistakes which i will need some help correcting.

To condence this post I will simply list the starting hands i didnt see to a flop, and cut out the sumaries, so you may have to be careful to see all find all my startin hands early,
*once it becomes 4 handed i will post every hand

Congratulations on the win! Will comment on individual hands when I have more time to review the HHs, but from a quick skim it looks like you're too aggressive early on. Why try to steal blinds with K3s and Q8s when you're risking 60 chips to win 30 net? The 74s hand was bad IMO, what are you doing calling 60 on the turn and 200 on the river with only a pair of 7s and AK on the board?

When blinds are bigger, particularly around the bubble, this sort of aggression is very effective though.

I should say my play with the 7/4 is one of my more moronic plays ever, part of why im so glad I won the turny... I dont usually try to make steals early but because (a.) i wanted to develope a loose image and (b.) I thought i could get away with it. But im still not sure if its worth it, and i dont know if i should be showin these sort of hands to make it obvious, or if i should just try and stay off the Radar.

Again that 7/4 play was solely on a read which, from all my experience with poker, need work.

No worries, we all make this kind of mistake every now and again (well, at least I do ).

To me it's definitely not worth trying to steal when blinds are below 50/100 (and maybe even 75/150). If you want to loosen up your starting hand requirements (and are confident of being able to let the hand go post-flop), I would just limp to see if you can hit at least two pair, and preferably trips or better. But that can be a recipe for bleeding off chips and having less leverage at the critical time.

I wouldn't worry about developing a table image early on at the $5.50 level. I play at this level too, and whilst there are a couple of players at each table that will pay attention to this stuff, early on most of them are just playing their cards. Seriously, I've been in tourneys where I've folded every hand not in the blinds for 3 orbits and when I've picked up AA or KK, gone all-in, and gotten at least one caller! Later on, when the better players are left, you can assume that they're at least partially paying attention to your playing style.

A6o - I think you can play this TPTK a little more aggressively, but if you had a read, disregard my thoughts.

J9s - You called a 3x bet, I'd probably fold this and save your chips for a better time.

The only possible reason to explain your raise of K3s is a positional bluff. Assuming that's your reason, I'm ok with it...Though I don't know it's really worth it this early.

Raising Q8s under the gone was just silly. Fold this preflop.

You misplayed every street of the 74s hand. Bet the turn if you want, but as soon as he puts another chip in, you are in check/fold mode. If you check when the 7 hits (perfectly fine to do so), then FOLD when he raises.

Typically, you don't want to raise low pocket pairs [44] at a full table. Limp and try to hit 3 of a kind.

97s hand: You're overplaying your suited/connected cards. This is an easy fold preflop. Your odds on the draw were iffy, but given the outs you had, I don't mind the turn call too much. And for the record, A7 is a fold here too.

AQ hand: unless you have a reason to think that sloverville is pushing over the top on a bluff, FOLD AQ to a reraise preflop. You were drawing to 3 outs.

Even 4-handed, do not call a preflop raise with J9s. Ever. This is questionable even heads-up.

HU:
I don't like calling for my opp's stack with A3s. If you're willing to play for all his chips, make the reraise that size, as you'd honestly rather tak thsi preflop.


In reference to the argument you made about trying to build a loose image: I think it can serve more to build a tight image. Then your steals are more successful later, when you need them.

So make your standard raise on level 1 be to 100. Raise that same amount with anything you raise.

I'm not sure exactly who this is responding to, but I'll mention that I didn't monitor much of my advice above for playing different than I do at the 109s, save that I removed some of the "tricky" plays.

Edit: in re-reading some of the comments above, I'm guessing that you're responding to taipen? I understand your view, but I think he's completely right about not worrying too much about table image at these stakes. Make the plays that will give you the most EV. And again, I think that it's entirely possible that presenting a tight image to those paying attention would pay off more, because of the added power it gives you on the bubble for players to respect your raises.
