A8 the cross over hand?

In several books they give A8 as the "cross over hand" meaning that it's the minimum Ax hand to call an all in with.
Could anyone give me their thoughts on when (in a SnG) you should stick to this advice and when it's time to call with Ax < A8 or with any ace?
