    Default question about min raise

if a table is passive and weak, consistently folds to min raises, whats the reason to open raise a larger ammount?

    g1u: any ideas?
The GrindHer: if you can raise and steal with 2xBB raises
The GrindHer: i dont see why u raise to 3xBB
The GrindHer: at the samet ime
The GrindHer: if u raise to 2xBB
The GrindHer: any smart player woudl call with a wide range of hands
The GrindHer: becuase of pot odds
    The GrindHer: but
    g1u: assuming no smart players.
The GrindHer: that wodl imply that the table has smart players
The GrindHer: and in this situation
    g1u: yea
The GrindHer: whi no smart players
    The GrindHer: then
    The GrindHer: why risk chips?

A large proportion of MTT guys just raise 2.5x when the blinds are relatively small. Saves you chips and looks about the same. The idea of pot odds doesnt really apply if you have crap like K5 and a guy from MP raises 2x with blinds 1k/2k. He might have you easily dominated and pot odds turn to implied odds. No bueno. Raising 2x occasinally is situational but it might look like you are really rooting for a call/raise with AA/KK..

Gabe has a solid point here, and it just shows that "it depends"

it depends on your table. if eveyrone folds to min-raise, then a min-raise is all that's needed. i however rarely fold to these if i have any sort of decent holding. i know a lot of players that don't fold to minraises as well...

Miniraise doesn't show a lot of strength, but a good player will be on the lookout for a trap with a miniraise. When the blinds are starting to get up there, just doubling the blinds can put enormous pressure on the BB to fold, but at the lower levels, feel free to use the double if it works for you table, but most players won't be very intimidated by the move.

Because you don't know how to play anything except your own cards, you always make the same raise preflop. I.e. you have learned not to vary your bets preflop according to the strength of your own hand, but you have not yet learned that sometimes you must vary your standard preflop raise according to the table (when the whole table calls any 3xBB bet you need to raise her up, when the whole table consistently folds to a minraise preflop, there is no reason to waste chips by betting 3x).

I think this falls under leak # 12 - don't play an MTT by a book.
